Two Baseball Players Named All-ECAC

AMHERST, Mass. -- Two members of the University of Massachusetts baseball team have been selected to the 2001 All-Eastern College Athletic Conference team. Senior designated hitter Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) was named to the second team, while sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) was an honorable mention selection.

Gorneault led the team with a .369 batting average this season, and was named first team All-Atlantic 10 Conference, first team All-New England and team co-Most Valuable Player. He tied for the team lead in home runs with 12, while ranking second on the squad with 41 runs batted in. Gorneault also stole nine bases, and finished the year with a .673 slugging percentage and a .432 on-base percentage. For his career, Gorneault ranks fifth all-time at UMass with 26 home runs.

Altieri earned second team All-Atlantic 10 and second team All-New England honors, after batting .339 on the season. He led the team with 42 runs batted in, while ranking third on the squad in home runs with eight. Altieri also tied for the team lead in doubles with 13, while starting all 46 of UMass' games and batting in the cleanup spot. Through his first two years as a Minuteman, Altieri is batting .330 with 11 home runs and 53 runs batted in.

UMass finished the 2001 season with an overall record of 27-19. The Minutemen posted a 16-6 record in Atlantic 10 Conference games, and won the league regular season title.
