Baseball Defeats Hartford 13-1

AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) hit two home runs for his eighth and ninth of the season and sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) hit two homers for his seventh and eighth of the year as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Hartford 13-1, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass improves to 18-16 on the season, while Hartford falls to 12-28.

Gorneault hit solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings, while Altieri hit two-run home runs in the first and in the fifth. Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit a solo homer that reached the roof of the Mullins Center in the seventh for his 10th of the year and he was followed by a solo homer by third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.).

Freshman righty Brandon White (Foster, R.I.) earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the season as he pitched seven innings allowing one run which was unearned on three hits and striking out four. John Manning received the loss for Hartford as he falls to 0-1.

The Minutemen return to action this weekend when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on Atlantic 10 foe George Washington on Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6. On Saturday the two teams will play a doubleheader at noon, and on Sunday the series will conclude with a single-game at noon. UMass is in fourth place in the A-10 with an 8-5 record and George Washington is in second with a 12-7 mark.
