Baseball Falls To Boston College 10-5 In Beanpot Finals

BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) went two for four with two runs batted in, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team fell to Boston College 10-5, this afternoon in the championship game of the Beanpot Classic at Fenway Park. UMass falls to 17-16 on the season and 9-2 in Beanpot play, while Boston College improves to 25-20.
UMass started off the game by scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch, while the Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by Brian Macchi. The Eagles took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when they added two more runs.
In the top of the fifth sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) drove in junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) when he grounded out to first base. UMass tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth when Gavin Clark singled to left field driving in senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) and junior designated hitter Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.). The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer by Brian Durkin.
The Minutemen tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore second baseman Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) singled in freshman shortstop Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.). The Eagles then scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 10-5 win.
Senior righty David Loonie (Longmeadow, Mass.) received the loss and Mark Sullivan earned the win.
The Minutemen return to action on Thursday, May 3, when they host Hartford at Earl Lorden Field at 3:00 p.m.
