Bracket Set For 2001 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts baseball team, regular season champions of the Atlantic 10 Conference for the seventh time in the last eight years, is the top seed for the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins this Thursday, May 17, from Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Minutemen will face fourth-seeded George Washington in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, May 17, at 4:00 p.m. The Minutemen closed out the regular season with a 26-17 record overall, 16-6 in the Atlantic 10. The Colonials currently stand at 35-21 overall, 13-9 in the A-10.

In the other opening round game, second-seeded Dayton (32-24, 15-7 A-10) will take on third-seeded Temple (24 28, 15-7 A-10) at 7:30 p.m.

Championship play continues on Friday, May 18 with loser's bracket play at 12:30 p.m. and winner's bracket play at 4:00 p.m. The winner of Game 3 will then meet the loser of Game 4 at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The title game of the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship will be played at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19. Should a seventh game be needed, it will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

All of UMass' games from the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship will be broadcast live on the UMass Sports Radio Network. The games will be carried on WHMP 1400 AM (Northampton), WHNP 1600 AM (Springfield) and WHMQ 1240 AM (Greenfield). The Voice of the Minutemen, Bob Behler, will handle the play-by-play duties, while Charles Bare will provide color commentary.
