AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior righty Nick Skirkanich (Cheshire, Conn.) earned a complete game win allowing one run on eight hits and striking out 10 as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Duquesne, 7-1, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass improves to 7-11 (4-2 A-10), while Duquesne falls to 10-16 (1-5 A-10). The Minutemen went 2-1 in the three game series as the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Mark Lyons hit a home run for Duquesne in the top of the first as the Dukes took an early 1-0 lead. UMass answered back in the bottom of the first when sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) grounded out to second base driving in sophomore infielder Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.).
After four scoreless innings UMass broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth when junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) hit a two-run single driving in Altieri and senior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.).
In the bottom of the seventh UMass scored three more runs to increase the lead to 6-1. Gorneault hit a RBI single to center field driving in sophomore shortstop Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.). Senez walked with the bases loaded to earn his third RBI of the game. Gorneault then scored on a wild pitch.
The Minutemen scored a run in the eighth when Altieri singled to left field driving in junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) for the game's last run.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday, April 11, when they host Sacred Heart at Earl Lorden Field at 3:00 p.m.
