Baseball Falls To Siena 12-6

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) went three for four with four runs batted in, including a two-run home run, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team fell to Siena College, 12-6, this afternoon at Siena Field. UMass falls to 5-10 on the season, while Siena improves to 9-20.
Siena started off the game by scoring two in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second. UMass answered back in the top of the fourth when sophomore shortstop Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) singled in junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.).
The Minutemen added two more in the top of the fifth when Altieri hit his third home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3, after junior outfielder Mike Kulak (Bristol, Conn.) doubled.
In the bottom of the fifth Siena scored seven runs including a three run double by first baseman Jim Buckley. Siena then scored two more in the sixth to increase its lead to 12-3.
In the top of the ninth UMass scored three runs. Altieri hit a two run double to right field driving in sophomore outfielder Tim Klett (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman infielder Colin Barden (Winchester, Mass.). Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) closed out the UMass scoring by singling to center field driving in Altieri.
Senior righty David Loonie (Longmeadow, Mass.) received the loss, while Mark Sanborn earned the win for Siena.
The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, April 7, when they host Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne in a doubleheader at Earl Lorden Field, starting at noon. UMass will take on Duquesne in a single game on Sunday, April 8, also at noon.
