AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) went three for five with six runs batted in as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Fairfield, 11-0, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass improves to 4-9 on the season, while Fairfield falls to 5-16. The Minutemen lead the all-time series 11-4.

Junior righty Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned his first win of the year as he gave up only one hit and struck out six in five innings. Freshman righty Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) took over for Santos in the sixth as he gave up one hit and struck out three in three innings, while freshman lefty Kevin Inglis (Zionsville, Ind.) finished the shut out by throwing a perfect ninth inning.

After a scoreless top of the first, UMass scored six runs in the bottom of the inning. Altieri started the scoring when he singled to left center driving in both junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) and senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.). Senior outfielder Gavin Clark (Springfield, Mass.) singled to center field, then junior infielder Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) doubled to right center driving in Altieri and Clark. Freshman infielder Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) earned a RBI when he singled in Senez and sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right driving in Stojanowski.

In the fourth, Altieri singled to right center driving in Gorneault and in the seventh Gorneault scored on an error by the catcher after stealing third base.

UMass added three more runs in the eighth on a three run double by Altieri driving in Gorneault, freshman infielder Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) and sophomore outfielder Tim Klett (Chicopee, Mass.).

The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday, April 4, when they host Central Connecticut at Earl Lorden Field at 3:00 p.m.
