AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts head football coach Mark Whipple has announced the 2001 schedule for the Minutemen. The slate features six home contests, and includes games against all of the other 10 schools in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

"This is going to be the most exciting schedule we have ever played at UMass," said Whipple. "We will play a number of tough games early in the year, and we are going to have to be ready. But we are trying to be champions, and we will not be able to achieve that without facing challenges and top competition."

The Minutemen will open the season at home against William & Mary on Sept. 1. UMass then hits the road for a game at Division I-A Marshall, the 2000 Mid-American Conference and Motor City Bowl champion, on Sept. 8. The Minutemen come back home to face 2000 Atlantic 10 co-champion and NCAA quarterfinalist Richmond on Sept. 15, before heading back to the road for a pair of tough contests. UMass will play at Atlantic 10 co-champion and NCAA semifinalist Delaware on Sept. 22, and then head to NCAA quarterfinalist Hofstra on Sept. 29.

After a week off, the Minutemen return home to face New Hampshire on Oct. 13, and then play host to James Madison on Oct. 20. UMass then travels to Villanova on Oct. 27, before coming back home to face Northeastern on Nov. 3. The season concludes with a road game at Maine on Nov. 10, and a home contest against Rhode Island on Nov. 17.

The Minutemen are scheduled to open spring practice on Friday, April 6. The annual Spring Game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.
