Baseball Defeats Vermont 5-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior righty Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned a complete game shutout win to improve to 4-3 on the season as the University of Massachusetts baseball team defeated Vermont 5-0, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Santos pitched nine shutout innings allowing three hits and striking out six. UMass improves to 15-15 on the season, while Vermont falls to 19-14.
In the bottom of the fourth UMass scored the first runs of the game when junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice driving in freshman second baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass), while senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass) scored on a fielding error by the third baseman to give UMass a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth Stojanowski doubled in freshman shortstop Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) and in the sixth sophomore designated hitter Tim Klett (Chicopee, Mass.) singled in Senez to extend the lead to 4-0. Gorneault singled to left field driving in Stojanowski, who doubled, to give UMass a 5-0 advantage in the seventh. Santos shut down Vermont the rest of the way to give UMass the win.
The Minutemen return to action on Thursday, April 26, when they travel to Worcester, Mass., to take on Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m.
