Baseball Splits Doubleheader With St. Bonaventure

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts baseball team split a doubleheader with Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. UMass is now 9-12 (5-3 A-10), while St. Bonaventure is 12-11 (4-4 A-10). The Bonnies won the first game 3-2, while the Minutemen took the second game 8-4.
In the first game, the Bonnies opened the game with two runs in the top of the first and one run in the top of the second. The Minutemen scored a run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore catcher Tom Ellerbrook (Northampton, Mass.) hit his first home run of the season to make the score 3-1. UMass cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when junior third baseman Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) singled in freshman pinch runner Colin Barden (Winchester, Mass.). Kyle Johnson then shut UMass down the rest of the way as he earned the win. Senior lefty Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) received the loss as he pitched seven innings allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out five.
Sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) had three runs batted in including his fourth homer of the season in the second game. After the Bonnies scored the first run of the game in the top of the third, UMass answered back by scoring three runs including a two-run single by Altieri. UMass increased its lead by scoring two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Junior outfielder Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) hit a two-run homer for his third of the season in the sixth. The Bonnies scored three runs in the top of the seventh but it was not enough. Junior righty Jesse Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win as he pitched six innings allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out four.
UMass will take on St. Bonaventure tomorrow in the final game of the three-game series at noon.
