Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior lefthanded pitcher Craig Szado (Monson, Mass.) threw a complete game five hitter, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts baseball team suffered a 4-3 loss at Liberty on the opening game of its spring trip. Szado surrendered only three earned runs and one walk while striking out five batters in eight innings of work. The Minutemen fall to 0-4 on the season with the loss, while Liberty improves to 9-7.

The Flames opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Keith Butler, but UMass tied up the score in the top of the second on a solo home run by junior outfielder Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.). Liberty came back with a run scoring on an error in the bottom of the second, before an RBI single by senior outfielder Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the third.

The Minutemen took their only lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning, on a solo home run by sophomore first baseman Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.). But Liberty came back with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, before an RBI triple by first baseman Matt Hagen in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in the winning run.

Anderson and Altieri led the UMass offense, both going two for four with a home run. Righthanded pitcher Anthony Pennix earned the victory for the Flames, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, while striking out nine.

The Minutemen will continue their series at Liberty tomorrow, March 18, with a 2:00 p.m. game.
