AMHERST, Mass. - Quarterback Jeff Krohn (Phoenix, Ariz.) will transfer to the University of Massachusetts and play football for the Minutemen next season, it was announced today by UMass head coach Mark Whipple. The 6'2", 186-pound Krohn, who has attended Arizona State University for the last three years, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He will enroll at UMass in January and take part in spring practice.

"We are very excited to have Jeff joining our football program," said Whipple. "He has a great deal of experience after starting at Arizona State for the last two years. He is also a great leader, and a tremendously efficient passer. Jeff really has all of the qualities that you look for in a quarterback."

Krohn started nine games for the Sun Devils this season, completing 115 of 213 passes for 1,942 yards and 19 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He completed 17 of 37 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns at Stanford, while hitting on 17 of 29 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns against Washington. In addition, Krohn threw four touchdown passes in victories over San Diego State, San Jose State and Louisiana-Lafayette.

Krohn also started nine games during the 2000 season, completing 125 of 254 passes for 1,751 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. During the Sun Devils' 2000 game against Oregon, he threw for career highs of 432 yards and five touchdowns. Over the course of his Arizona State career, Krohn completed 240 of 467 passes for 3,693 yards and 31 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

A 1999 graduate of Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., Krohn redshirted at Arizona State during his freshman year in 1999. A three-time letterwinner in football during his high school days, he earned all-conference honors during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Krohn also earned all-city honors and was named his team's Most Valuable Player in his senior year. His father, Jim, was a four-time letterwinner in football at the University of Arizona, and captained the 1979 Wildcats, who finished the season 6-5-1 with a trip to the Fiesta Bowl. Jim ranks seventh in Wildcat history in career passing yards (3,305).

UMass finished the 2001 season with an overall record of 3-8 and a 3-6 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Minutemen won the Division I-AA National Championship during the 1998 season, and the 2001 senior class set a school record with 31 victories over the course of their careers.
