Cincinnati, Ohio - Xavier's Dan Limburg scored his third goal of the game one minute and 29 seconds into overtime to defeat the University of Massachusetts men's soccer 4-3 here on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Minutemen fall to 13-5 on the season, 8-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The UMass loss, coupled with Dayton's 2-0 victory over Rhode Island, assures UMass the third seed in next weekend's A-10 Tournament. Xavier closes out its season with a 7-11-1overall record, 5-6 in conference play.

Xavier took an early lead in the match with two quick goals against the Minutemen. The first goal came when Sam Fiore headed in a corner kick just over five minutes into the match. The Musketeers added a second goal 1:42 later when Limburg blasted a shot from close range after a free kick.

UMass broke through at the 11:03 mark when junior Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored on a breakaway after being fed a pass from Travis Cooke. Xavier answered Deren's goal when Limburg again scored off a corner kick in the 29th minute.

After regrouping at the half, the Minutemen got within a goal with just over 30 minutes left to play when Xavier goalkeeper Brian Schaeper misplayed a ball outside the box and freshman Jason Golesky (Trumble, Conn.) easily put the ball into the empty net for his second of the season.

Deren leveled the match at three when he blasted a free kick from just outside the top of the box just under the crossbar with just over 12 minutes remaining.

UMass nearly won the match in the closing minutes of regulation as Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) blasted a shot off the inside of the far post.

The Minutemen will take on host Dayton at 8:00 p.m. on Friday night in the second game of the 2001 Atlantic 10 Tournament. Regular-season champion Rhode Island will face fourth-seeded Richmond at 5:30 p.m. to open tournament play.
