NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team defeated Fordham, 4-2, yesterday in Atlantic 10 tennis action. The Minutewomen are now 1-0 this season.
The match started off with singles play because weather forced the cancellation of the doubles matches. At No. 1, freshman Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) fell to regionally ranked Ioana Dragan (6-7, 0-6). She upset her last week in the semifinals of the Eastern Collegiate Championship. Picking up singles victories for the Minutewomen were sophomores Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) and Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) as well as senior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and freshman Ashley Smith (Southboro, Mass.). At No. 4, senior Lindsey Gillooly (Stoughton, Mass.) was forced to withdraw from her match due to an injury. She won the first set (6-2), but was trailing in the second (0-5).
The Minutewomen will play their first home match Wednesday, Oct. 3, when they host regional rival UConn. The match is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
