AMHERST, Mass. - Angela Zampella scored 23 points and added 10 rebounds, eight assists, and four steals, as St. Joseph's held off UMass for a 66-54 win in women's basketball action tonight at the Mullins Center. UMass dropped to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic-10 with the loss, while St. Joseph's improved to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the A-10.

UMass placed three players in double figures, led by sophomore Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who scored a career-high 20 points, on 10-for-11 shooting from the free throw line, and pulled down six rebounds. Classmate Ebony Pegues (Columbus, Ohio) also established a new career-high as she had 12 points in only 15 minutes of action off the bench. Senior Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio) added 13 points for the Minutewomen, and also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out six assists.

St. Joseph's took a 25-17 lead into halftime, and made a quick 10-2 run to begin the second stanza to take a 35-19 lead with 15:25 left. But behind three baskets from Pegues, UMass responded with a 14-3 run of their own and cut the lead to 38-31with 8:53 remaining.

After a timeout at the 7:08 mark, St. Joseph's hit three consecutive three pointers to push the lead back out to 14 (49-34). The Minutewomen would cut the lead back to six with two minutes left on the second of two free throws by Pegues, but the Hawks made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

For the game, St. Joseph's shot 41.3% from the field and 76.0% from the free throw line, while UMass could only manage to hit 16 of their 56 shots from the field (28.6%). The Minutewomen did get a solid performance at free throw line, as they shot 20-for-24 (83.3%), and equaled a season-low with 16 turnovers.

Irina Krasnoshiok added 14 points for St. Joseph's, while leading scorer Susan Moran (22.9 ppg) had 11 in only 21 minutes.

UMass returns to action this Sunday, Jan. 7, as it travels to Olean, N.Y. for an Atlantic-10 Conference match-up with St. Bonaventure. Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.
