Minutemen Roll In Season Opener 36-16

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - In his first game for Massachusetts, Richard Lucero connected for 376 yards Thursday night, leading the Minutemen to a 36-16 victory over William & Mary.
Lucero put the ball up 29 times and completed 18 for a pair of touchdowns in the season opener for the two Atlantic 10 Conference teams.
Marcel Shipp carried the ball 30 times for the Minutemen and gained 104 yards as he scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns on runs of 6 and 2 yards.
In the third quarter, Lucero hit five of six passes for a total of 165 yards, including a 53-yard scoring strike to Jimmy Howard.
The game was tied 7-7 in the first period, after both teams scored on their first possessions of the game. Lucero marched Massachusetts 80 yards following the game's opening kickoff, and hit Adrian Zullo with a 16-yard pass.
William & Mary's David Corley connected to Rich Musinski for an 86-yard scoring strike, outstretching Massachusetts defender Jeremy Robinson, who fell on the Minutemen's 43-yard-line.
Komlan Lonergan, who led the Tribe with 52 rushing yards, made the final William & Mary score.
