AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore quarterback Kelly Seibert (Monroe, N.Y.) threw for 168 yards, including a 69 yard touchdown strike to junior Eddie Bowman (Philadelphia, Pa.), leading the Maroon squad to a 15-13 win over the White team in the University of Massachusetts spring football game on Saturday afternoon at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

Sophomore fullback Darrell Shabazz (Manchester, Conn.) opened up the scoring for the White, taking a short dump off pass from junior quarterback Ed Campbell (North Arlington, N.J.) 49 yards to the endzone with 1:52 left in the first quarter. The Maroon team came back in the second quarter as freshman quarterback Matt Guice (Coral Springs, Fla.) hit sophomore wideout Jason Morgan (Foxboro, Mass.) in the middle of the endzone from 12 yards out, making the score 7-6 after the failed extra point. Siebert and Bowman hooked up for the 69-yard strike just three minutes later, putting the Maroon squad ahead 13-7.

The White squad tied the game at 13 apiece in the third quarter on a Campbell sneak from one yard out after a Steve Ley (Philadelphia, Pa.) reception brought the ball just inside the one yard line. A busted play on the extra point attempt left the game tied until the five minute mark of final quarter. Freshman Antwan Gary (Syracuse, N.Y.) caused a safety with a backside hit on Campbell as he was dropping back to pass deep in White territory. Senior Dan Schneider (Fitchburg, Mass.) made the tackle on junior offensive linemann Bryah Gifford (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) in the endzone, resulting in a 15-13 win for the Maroon squad.

Senior strong safety Brian Smith (Wilmington, Del.) made seven tackles for the white team, including three sacks for a loss of 24 yards. Freshman defensive back Rob Williams (Dolton, Ill.) led all defensive players with eight tackles for the White team. Sophomore linebacker Corey Potter (Doylestown, Pa.) and Schneider both had five tackles to lead the Maroon. Schneider also added three sacks for a loss of 15 yards.

Seibert led all quarterbacks with 168 yards on nine receptions and one touchdown. Campbell completed 12 passes for 157 yards and one touchdown for the White squad. Junior tailback Kevin Quinlan (Somerville, Mass.) was the only player to gain double digits in rushing yards, finishing with 85 yards on 18 carries.

The defending Atlantic 10 champion Minutemen open the 2000 campaign with a home date against A-10 rival William and Mary on Aug. 31, under the lights at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
