AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis Head Coach Judy Dixon has announced the signing of two national letters of intent to join her women's tennis team next season. They are Jafra Depontes and Susan Hyams.

Depontes, a native of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, has been competing in national tennis tournaments since the age of 12. The 5'5" right-hander played No. 1 singles as a senior at Kamehameha High School, where she was a singles finalist at the Hawaii State High School Tennis Championships. As a junior, she was the ILH High School Tennis Championship doubles champion and a doubles finalist at the Pacific Coast Junior National Championships. She also participated in cross country in high school.

"Jafra is an excellent all-around athlete," Dixon says. "She has good hands and is very quick. She will make an immediate impact right away in the middle to the top of the singles lineup and in doubles. She has national experience as one of the top players in Hawaii, and I look for her to be one of the keys to next year's success."

Hyams, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, played tennis at Sycamore High School, where she was the No. 2 singles player and a No. 1 doubles player. The 5'8" left-hander has defeated seven players who were ranked in the top 100 nationally and was the singles champion at the Greater Miami Conference Tournament as a junior.

"I am very pleased that Susan is coming here," Dixon says. "She is a strong doubles player with a lot of experience and she is a left hander. I think doubles was our biggest weakness this year, and she will add a big boost to that area."
