PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) broke the UMass single-season rebounding record with 11 boards, but the Minutewomen fell, 66-55, tonight to George Washington in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Philadelphia, Pa. Petra Dubovcova led the Colonials with 20 points. UMass completes the season with an overall record of 14-15 and a 10-6 mark in conference play. Butler surpassed Julie Ready?s record of 292 set in 1978-79, with 294 boards for the year.
Senior Tonia Thomas (Seguin, Texas) paced the Minutewomen in the loss with 12 points on five-of-11 shooting from the field. Senior Alison MacFarland (Brick, N.J.) added nine points in the game to finish her career with 1,060 career points.
The Colonials jumped out to an early 7-4 advantage in the first half before UMass retaliated with a 7-0 spurt, including five points from junior Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio), to take a 11-7 lead at the 12:33. But George Washington would take the lead again with a 9-2 run to come on top, 16-13 at the 9:11. Both squads would trade baskets for the remaining of the half, with MacFarland connecting on a pair of free throws at the 2:13 to pull to within one point of the Colonials at halftime, 24-23.
George Washington came out of intermission with a 17-6 run to take a commanding 41-31 lead at the 10:35. The Minutewomen cut that advantage to four twice thereafter at the 7:41 (43-38) and the 6:22 (45-41) when Jaywana Bradley hit two free throws. But that would be the closest UMass would get for the remainder of the game. The Colonials converted on 13-of-17 free-throws in the final five minutes of the game to secure the victory.
