THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The No. 11 University of Massachusetts women's water water polo team went 5-1 on the week. UMass concluded its eight game California trip with a 5-2 loss to No. 5 San Jose State and a 4-3 win over No. 16 Pacific. The Minutewomen then returned to Amherst and swept through four games at a CWPA (Collegiate Water Polo Association) New England Division Tournament, at UMass' Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool, on Saturday. UMass defeated Yale (16-3), Dartmouth (16-0), Mount Holyoke (5-0, forfeit) and Brown (16-6). In the loss to San Jose State, senior All-American Katie Grogan (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and freshman Kelly Chassy (Morgan Hill, Calif.) each scored once. Chassy scored two goals, including the game-winner with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter to lift UMass to the win over Pacific. In the Yale win, freshman Mattie Newell (Dillsburg, Pa.) led the offense with four goals, while Grogan added three. Senior All-American Marci Hupp (Hilliard, Ohio) and freshman Rosie Baker (Bloomingdale, Ill.) each scored two goals, while five other Minutewomen each scored once. Sophomore goalie Dana Sinkwich (Ontario, Calif.) made four saves in three shutout quarters and sophomore Megan Thompson (Chesterfield, Mo.) made a save in the fourth quarter. With the win, UMass improved to 2-0 all-time versus the Bulldogs. Thompson made six saves for UMass' first shutout of the season versus Dartmouth. Senior co-captain Claudia Clement (Piti, Guam), Hupp and M. Newell each scored three times, while sophomore Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) and Baker each added two goals. UMass is now 8-0 all-time versus The Big Green. In the win over Brown, Grogan led the way with four goals and Sinkwich made four saves. Clement, senior Laurie Edwards (Lansing, Mich.), sophomore Megan Perry (Fresno, Calif.) and Chassy each scored twice, while junior Sarah Newell (Dillsburg, Pa.), Dettloff and freshman Amy Black (Fremont, Calif.) each netted a goal. With the win, UMass improved to 9-4 all-time versus the Bears. UMass is now 13-5 overall (4-0 CWPA) on the season.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The Minutewomen return to the pool when they host a rematch versus Brown on Wednesday, March 22, at 7:00 p.m., at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. UMass then travels to New Haven, Conn., for a CWPA New England Division Tournament on Saturday, March 25, and Sunday, March 26. On Saturday, the Minutewomen face Mount Holyoke (12:00 p.m.) and Brown (6:00 p.m.), while on Sunday they play Yale (9:30 a.m.) and Dartmouth (2:00 p.m).
CWPA NEW ENGLAND DOMINANCE: UMass kicked off CWPA New England Division league play with four wins this past weekend, improving its all-time league record to 30-0. UMass finished 7-0 in 1997, 9-0 in 1998 and 10-0 in 1999, while winning the CWPA New England Championship Tournament title in all three seasons.
TEAM LEADERS: Senior Katie Grogan leads the team in scoring with 37 goals and 16 assists for 53 points in 59 quarters. She also leads the team in steals with 38 and is tied for the lead in ejections drawn with 18. Claudia Clement is second in scoring with 21 goals and six assists for 27 points, while freshman Kelly Chassy is third with 20 goals and four assists for 24 points. Sophomore goalie Dana Sinkwich has 109 saves, a .630 save percentage and a 4.34 goals against average.
THE McOSKER FILE: Dan McOsker is in his third season as head coach of the UMass women's water polo team, and now sports a 74-19 (.796) overall mark. Last season, McOsker's squad set a school record with 31 wins, finishing 31-8 on the season and winning the Eastern Championship for the second straight year. The Minutewomen placed 10th in the U.S. Water Polo Collegiate I National Championship, and McOsker was honored as the New England Coach of the Year. In 1998 McOsker was named the CWPA Eastern Coach of the Year
