BRADENTON, Fla. -- UMass junior Nick Skirkanich (Chesire, Conn.) pitched his second career complete game on Friday, allowing just one run while striking out a career-high 13 in a 9-1 victory over La Salle. The Minutemen improve to 4-6 with the win over the Explorers.

UMass jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the b ottom of the second inning off La Salle starter James Kelly. After reaching on a walk, senior Kevin O'Connell (Hartland, Vt.) advanced to second on a walk, then reached third and scored on two wild pitches by Kelly.

The Minutemen went up 4-0 with a two-out rally in the third inning. Sophomore Scott Anderson (Easton, Conn.) doubled over the left fielder's head and was later forced in by three straight walks by La Salle. Sophomore shortstop Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) hit a two-run single with the bases loaded, scoring sophomore Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) and O'Connell.

UMass added two more in the fifth inning. Senez came through again with the bases loaded, ripping a double to the wall in left field, once again bringing home Morgan and O'Connell.

After the Explorers scored one in the seventh, UMass responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Anderson led off with a single, andvancing to second on an errant pickoff throw by the La Salle pitcher and scoring all the way from second on a wild pitch. Junior Nick Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) followed with a triple to the right-center gap and Senez knocked in his fifth run of the day with a single to left, making the final score 9-1.

The Minutemen will be back in action again on Tuesday in Amherst. UMass will face Quinnipiac in the home opener at 3:00 p.m.
