AMHERST, Mass. - James Madison placed four players in double figures as they defeated the University of Massachusetts tonight, 72-65, in women's basketball action at William D. Mullins Center. The loss was the third straight for the Minutewomen and dropped their record to 3-4 on the season. James Madison improved to 4-3 with the win.
James Madison used a 14-5 run over the last 4:37 of the first half to take a 35-28 lead into halftime, but UMass would cut the lead to three at the 18:16 mark of the second half on a Paige Harris (Rochester Hills, Mich.) three-pointer. UMass, however, who was once again hampered by poor shooting, would get no closer as the Dukes went on a quick 7-0 run to pull away again.
Senior Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio) scored 14 of her career-high 25 points in the last two minutes and 27 seconds of the game, but it was too little too late as the Minutewomen shot only 33.8% for the game (24-of-71), including a 13-for-43 showing in the second half. The Minutewomen were also outscored in the paint, 41-27. Coyner went 4-for-7 from three point land on the night, and was 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
UMass sophomore Amber Sneed (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the only other Minutewoman in double figures as she came off the bench to score 15 points in 25 minutes of action. Classmate Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and narrowly missed a double-double with eight points.
James Madison was led by Jess Cichowicz' 16 points, while Nadine Morgan had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Hollee Franklin and Allyson Keener were the other double-digit scorers for the Dukes, as they netted 14 and 11 points respectively.
UMass returns to action at the Mullins Center on Sunday, Dec. 10, as they take on No. 7 Rutgers. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
