UMass Cross Country Competes at New England Championships

BOSTON, MA. -- The UMass women's cross country team placed fifth and the men's team took 14th place at the New England Championship, held last Friday at Franklin Park.

Leading the way for the Minutewomen was junior Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.), who took 11th place overall with a time of 18:07. Senior Melissa Henderson (Abington, Mass.) was right behind, placing 24th at 18:33. The next three UMass finisher's were senior Megan McCormick (State College, Pa.), freshman Molly Ketschek (Wilbraham, Mass.) and junior Katherine Blais (Andover, Mass.) as they placed 40th, 44th and 62nd respectively.

Yale (20) won the 36-team women's race and was followed by Providence (57), Rhode Island (133), Middlebury (179) and UMass (181).

For the Minutemen, senior Mike Pieck (Guilderland, N.Y.) led the way by finishing 25th overall with a time of 25:18. Junior Kevin Curtin (Chelmsford, Mass.) followed at 78th, logging a time of 26:05. Next for UMass were junior Ryan Corbett (Highland, N.Y.) and senior Brendan Sullivan (New City, N.Y.) who took 93rd and 94th respectively, both finishing at 26:20. Junior Sal Nastasi (Merrich, N.Y.) was next at 121st with 26:40.

Providence won the 42-team men's race (17), and was followed by Keene State (119), Brown (122), Yale (160) and Boston College (173). The Minutemen finished with a team score of 411.

The men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Saturday, October 28th at the Atlantic-10 Championship in Pittsburgh, Pa.
