AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio) tallied a team-high 13 points and dished out a team-high eight assists in the University of Massachusetts, 69-42, victory over Temple at home on Jan. 27 in the Mullins Center. The win marked No. 130 for head coach Joanie O'Brien, whose Minutewomen now improve to 6-2 in the Atlantic 10 and 9-10 overall. The Owls fall to 0-8 in the conference and 5-14 overall.
"It was a victory we really needed after the St. Bonaventure loss, which we thought we really gave away," O'Brien said. "It was a solid defensive effort tonight."
Sophomore Nekole Smith (Ann Arbor, Mich.) fell just short of a double-double on the night with nine points and nine rebounds. Seniors Jaywana Bradley (Bronx, N.Y.) and Tonia Thomas (Seguin, Texas) also netted nine points in the game. Freshman Kristin Cannon (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) tied her career-high of five points in just four minutes of action.
UMass held Temple to a Mullins Center opponent low of 11 points in the first half on only 9.5 percent shooting, while shooting 40 percent itself in the first half, to lead at halftime, 27-11. The Minutewomen's defensive effort stayed solid in the second half as the Owls were limited to another Mullins Center opponent low of nine field goals for the entire game and a 20.5 percent shooting accuracy from the field. UMass committed 23 fouls in the game, however, to give Temple 22 points from the charity stripe. The Minutewomen shot 50.9 percent in the game, while outrebounding the Owls, 47-24.
Ieesha Turnage led Temple in scoring with 10 points on the night. Nicole Chaszar, who was second on the squad in scoring coming into tonight's contest at 9.4 points per game, was held scoreless in the game on zero-of-10 shooting from the field.
UMass is next in action on Jan. 29 versus St. Joseph's at 2 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
