Women's Cross Country Heads To The Bronx

THE WEEK AHEAD: UMass travels to Van Cortland Park for the Meet of Champions on Oct. 2 in Bronx, N.Y.

HIRSCH LEADS THE WAY: Senior Sally Hirsch (Brookline, Mass.) has once again shot out of the pack early this season. Hirsch has paced the team in the first two meets of the season with two top-ten performances, leading the Minutewomen to second and third place finishes. Last season, Hirsch led all UMass runners in the first three meets, including two top-five performances and 33rd place finish in the Meet of Champions with a time of 18:56.

STILL ON TOP: The UMass women remained at No. 1 in the latest Atlantic 10 Coaches? Poll for the fourth consecutive week. Rhode Island is second in the poll, followed by Virginia Tech in third. The women are attempting to win their fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship.

HEAD COACH JULIE LaFRENIERE: Julie LaFreniere is in her 13th season at the helm of Minutewomen cross country/track & field teams. She has led the team to six out of the last eight Atlantic 10 cross country titles, including the last four in a row. While an undergraduate at UMass, LaFreniere led her team to a New England Championship and a ninth-place finish at the first women?s National Championship. The 1977 UMass graduate has been named A-10 Coach of the Year five times, in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1997.
