LAST WEEK?S ACTION: The Minutewomen dropped a pair of games on the road to No. 3 North Carolina and No. 16 Duke this past weekend. Against Carolina, freshman Krysta Johnson (E. Setauket, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal to account for UMass? lone score, while junior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) stopped a penalty stroke in the 2-1 loss to Duke.
THE WEEK AHEAD: UMass continues its tough early season schedule with two more ranked opponents this week. The Minutewomen return home on Wednesday to host No. 19 Harvard before travelling to Connecticut on Sunday to face the No. 1 Huskies.
TOUGH SCHEDULE: Counting this week?s games against Harvard and UConn, UMass will have played seven ranked teams in its first nine games this season. Even more impressive is that five of seven are currently ranked in the top 10 teams in the country (No. 1 UConn, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Maryland, No. 6 Virginia, No. 8 James Madison).
JOHNSON GETS FIRST GOAL: Freshman forward Krysta Johnson scored her first career goal in UMass? 4-1 loss to North Carolina last Saturday. Johnson becomes the first of the UMass freshmen this season to notch a goal.
CORNER DEFENSE DOES WELL: The UMass penalty corner defense has performed well so far this season, not allowing a goal on 42 chances. UMass? best efforts against penalty corners have come against Duke and Maryland, holding Duke to no goals on 13 chances and Maryland to no goals on 14 opportunities.
SCHMIDT MOVES TO SCORING LEAD: With her goal against Duke last Sunday, junior Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) moved into the team?s scoring lead with five points on two goals and an assist. Schmidt finished fifth on the team in scoring last season with 12 points on six goals.
HEAD COACH PATTY SHEA: Patty Shea is in her third season as head coach of the Minutewomen. Posting a 29-23 record in her time at UMass, including a pair of NCAA appearance and Atlantic 10 Championships, she had previously served as an assistant coach at Harvard and Iowa and was a member of the 1988 and 1996 U.S. Olympic teams. Shea graduated from UMass in 1984 where she was a two-time, first-team All-American goalie for Pam Hixon.
