UMass Men?s Basketball Announces 1999-00 Schedule
September 10, 1999 | Men's Basketball
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts today released its 1999-2000 men?s basketball schedule, a slate that once again ranks among the toughest in the nation. The Minutemen have 10 teams on their schedule which appeared in the 1999 NCAA Tournament and two teams that competed in last year?s NIT. This schedule includes a game against defending national champion Connecticut, and against perennial national powers Texas and Villanova, 1999 NCAA Tourney participants Detroit, Rhode Island, Temple and George Washington, and the continuation of regional rivalries against Boston University and Boston College.
Under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach Bruiser Flint, UMass will open the season on Nov. 20 at Iona. The Minutemen will continue on the road with a trip down I-91 to face the Huskies of UConn on Nov. 22 in the ?MassMutual U-Game? at Gampel Pavilion. The home opener will feature Marshall (Nov. 29) followed by in-state rival Boston University (Dec. 2) and a trip to the Conte Forum to face Boston College (Dec. 6) in the Commonwealth Classic.
December matchups will feature NCAA Tournament Teams including Villanova (Dec. 6) at the Mullins Center and Detroit (Dec. 11) in Detroit. A southern swing at Christmas time has the Minutemen traveling to Miami to face ACC opponent Florida State (Dec. 18) in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic. UMass continues south with a flight to the Caribbean for three games in the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic (Dec. 21 23). The Puerto Rico tournament features a field of nationally ranked opponents like Tennessee and UNC Charlotte, and includes Tulsa, Southern Illinois, Boston College, Illinois @ Chicago and host American @ Puerto Rico.
UMass begins its quest to regain the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season and tournament titles with the conference opener at home against St. Bonaventure (Jan. 6). The A-10 slate includes Mullins Center visits from Rhode Island (Jan. 22), Temple (Feb. 1), and George Washington (Feb. 29), while featured conference road games include Virginia Tech (Jan. 29), Xavier (Feb. 12) and Temple (Feb. 26).
?UMass is always going to play a tough schedule,? Flint said. ?That?s our philosophy: ?Any time, any place, any team.? We have some tough games on some tough opponent courts.?
The Minutemen will appear on television at least 14 times this year, including seven national telecasts. The Rhode Island (Jan. 22), Xavier (Feb. 12), and Temple (Feb. 26) games will all be carried by ESPN. ABC will televise the Texas (Feb. 8) contest. ESPN2 is set to show the Connecticut, Villanova, and Temple (Feb. 1) games, while SportsChannel Florida will carry the Florida State matchup in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic. The remainder of UMass? television appearances will be picked up by the A-10 Network and WGGB Channel 40 in Springfield.
