LAST WEEK?S ACTION: The Minutewomen split the week?s games with a 3-2 win over No. 18 Harvard and falling to No. 1 UConn, 4-1. UMass staged a thrilling three-goal second half comeback against the Crimson, before giving the Huskies a tough contest in Storrs.
THE WEEK AHEAD: UMass plays its eighth consecutive game against a ranked opponent with a Wednesday night contest at Boston University before opening conference action against Rhode Island on Saturday. UMass will be looking to avenge its regular season loss to URI last year, the Minutewomen?s only conference loss of the year.
TOUGH SCHEDULE: Counting this week?s game against Boston University, UMass will have played eight ranked teams in its first 10 games this season. Even more impressive is that six of eight are currently ranked in the top 12 teams in the country (No. 1 UConn, No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Maryland, No. 8 Virginia, No. 9 James Madison, No. 12 Duke).
MILLBAUER HAS CAREER GAME: Senior forward Chrissy Millbauer (Easton, Conn.) was an integral part of UMass 3-2 comeback win against Harvard with the first multiple goal game of her career. Millbauer scored her first goal on a penalty stroke with UMass facing a 2-0 deficit and then proceeded to score the game-winner.
BRUEMMER NETS PAIR: Sophomore Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) had a strong offensive week with a pair of goals. Bruemmer netted one each against Harvard and UConn, both on penalty corners. Bruemmer now leads the team in scoring with eight points on four goals.
ROBINSON ON CAREER ASSISTS CHART: With her two assists this week, junior back Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) has moved into a tie for seventh place on the UMass career assists chart with 19, tied with Laura O?Neil ?80. Next up for Robinson is Julie McHugh, who posted 20 assists between 1976 and 1979.
CROOKS GETS FIRST WIN: Senior co-captain Michelle Crooks (Feasterville, Pa.) recorded her first career win in her first start this season vs. Harvard on Wednesday. Crooks made two saves, while allowing two goals in the contest. Crooks? only previous career start came in her sophomore campaign against Wake Forest, a 4-1 loss.
HEAD COACH PATTY SHEA: Patty Shea is in her third season as head coach of the Minutewomen. Posting a 30-24 record in her time at UMass, including a pair of NCAA appearance and Atlantic 10 Championships, she had previously served as an assistant coach at Harvard and Iowa and was a member of the 1988 and 1996 U.S. Olympic teams. Shea graduated from UMass in 1984 where she was a two-time, first-team All-American goalie for Pam Hixon.
