WHAT?S NEXT: UMass heads to Ohio to square off with the Atlantic 10?s two Buckeye State schools. On Friday at 7:00 p.m., the Minutemen take on Xavier at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati. The Musketeers won last year?s meeting at Totman Field by a score of 4-2. UMass leads the all-time series 3-2. Then on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., UMass has a showdown with defending Atlantic 10 champion Dayton, which won 1-0 last year at Totman Field. The all-time series between the two schools is tied at 2-2, with Dayton winning the last two meetings. Incidentally, Dayton is the site of this year?s Atlantic 10 Championships, held Nov. 5-7.
MINUTEMEN TOP HOKIES FOR FIRST TIME EVER: UMass entered Sunday?s contest with the visiting Virginia Tech Hokies with an all-time record of 0-3-1 in the series. The Minutemen were able to get their first ever win against Tech, despite giving up the first goal of the game for the second straight time, by a score of 4-2. Junior Patrick Beattie (Mobile, Ala.), sophomore Mike Janusz (Elm Grove, Wis.), junior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) and senior Adam Black (San Jose, Calif.) all scored goals for UMass. Senior goalkeeper Todd Fowler (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made two saves and picked up his third win in as many starts.
UMASS STOPS GW, 3-1: On Friday at Totman Field, the Minutemen spotted the George Washington Colonials a 1-0 lead before Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.) knocked in a loose ball in front to tie the score at the 31:40 mark. Kinateder then scored his second of the game and fourth in the last two matches at 72:10 to break the tie and give UMass the lead for good. Senior James Redmond (Springfield, Mass.) notched an assist on the game-winner. Senior Adam Black added an insurance goal at 87:07, and senior goalkeeper Todd Fowler made three saves in the win.
WIN STREAK AT FOUR: UMass has won its last four games and nine of its last eleven. It is the longest win streak since the end of the 1997 season. Incidentally, the school record for longest winning streak is nine games, set from 1930-1932, the first three years of the UMass varsity soccer program. UMass last won five in a row in 1995, when it finished 15-5-2 and advanced to the Atlantic 10 title game.
FOURTEEN GOALS IN THREE GAMES A RECORD: The Minutemen have scored a combined total of 14 goals in their last three games. No team in UMass history has ever scored as many goals in as few games. Several squads tallied 13 over the course of three games. The 17 goals scored over the past four games falls one goal shy of the UMass four-game record of 18 set in 1954. Incidentally, the Minutemen, who have already won more than twice as many games as they did all of last season and as many conference games, scored just 19 goals all of last season. The Minutemen matched that mark in ten games this season, scoring goal #19 against Temple.
BLACK NAMED CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior forward Adam Black was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Player of the Week for the week ending October 3. Black was honored for his three-goal, eight-point performance against St. Joseph?s on Sunday, Oct. 2. Black shared the honor with La Salle goalkeeper Don Tuohey.
KOCH WINS 150TH GAME OF HIS COACHING CAREER: Sunday?s 4-2 win over Virginia Tech was the 150th in the coaching career of UMass head coach Sam Koch. Koch coached at Stanford where he won 58 games from 1984-1989. He came to UMass in 1991, and has now won 92 games.
HEAD COACH SAM KOCH: Now in his ninth season at the helm of the Minutemen, Sam Koch (Colby ?79) is the second winningest coach in UMass history, behind only Lawrence Briggs (123 wins, 1930-67). Koch, who came to UMass in the fall of 1991, has complied a record of 92-61-15 (.592) during his tenure in Amherst. Prior to coming to UMass, Koch served as head coach at Stanford from 1984-89, compiling a record of 58-53-16 (.520). Koch?s overall career record is 150-114-31 (.561).
