1993 UMass Field Hockey Season Preview

September 04, 1993 | Field Hockey

A repeat of 1992?

Well...almost.

When the 1993 season opens for the University of Massachusetts field hockey team, the Minutewomen are not looking for an actual repeat of the 1992 season when they posted a 21-2 overall record, won the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four.

The Minutewomen, who return seven starters for 1993, are looking to add another accomplishment to their long list of achievements–an NCAA championship. And, UMass head coach Pam Hixon sees the possibility of the 1993 squad bringing home that national title.

"We have a lot of experience returning from the 1992 team," says Hixon, who has guided UMass teams to all 12 NCAA Tournaments. "We will try to carry over the success we had last season to this year. Despite the loss of five players, we will have an exciting offensive team with the entire forward line returning and depth and experience at midfield."

Senior forward Jenn Salisbury (Newville, PA), a 1992 All-America third team selection, is the top returning scorer for UMass as she tallied 46 points on 12 goals and 22 assists (team high). The 1992 co-Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, she will lead an offensive attack that returns 50.8 percent (30 of 59) of the goals scored, 80.3 percent (45 of 56) of the assists and 62.6 percent ( I 09 of 174) of the points scored in 1992.

The following is a position-by-position breakdown of the 1993 Minutewomen:
FORWARDS: Aside from 1993 All-America candidate Salisbury, UMass returns All-America candidate and senior captain Tara Jelley (Greenfield, MA) and junior Danielle Borges (Blackstone, MA). A 1992 Northeast Region All-America second team selection, Jelley was the Minutewomen's third-leading scorer with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Jelley also scored the game-winning goal in UMass' 1-0 overtime victory over Penn State in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game that propelled the Minutewomen to the Final Four. Filling out the starting forward line is Borges, who scored UMass' goal in the 3-1 loss to Iowa in the national semifinal game. In 1992, Borges was the team's fourth-leading scorer with 15 points on six goals and three assists. Sophomores Kerry Metelski (Windham, NH) and Streya Volta (Gladwyne, PA) and freshmen Jennifer Gutzman (Falls Village, CT), Jody Loduca (San Diego, CA) and Julie Loranger (Dartmouth, MA) will also challenge for playing time on the forward line. Coach Hixon comments: "The forward line will be the strength of the team. The trio of Salisbury, Jelley and Borges are in their third year of playing together so they are familiar with one another. They also possess explosive speed."

MIDFIELD: The depth at midfield will be a key for UMass in 1993. Leading the midfield corps is All-America candidate and senior captain Holly Hockenbrock (Bear, DE) and junior Colleen Duffy (Manchester, NJ). A 1992 Northeast Region All-America second team selection, Hockenbrock recorded 12 assists, second highest on the team. Duffy, a starter in all 23 games last season, scored four points on one goal and two assists. Sophomore Andrea Cabral (Somerset, MA) also returns for the Minutewomen. In 1992, she scored one goal in 12 game appearances. Freshman Kyle Rothenberger (Gilbertsville, PA) is expected to make an immediate impact at midfield. A 1992 two-sport high school All-America in field hockey and lacrosse, Rothenberger participated in the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival along with UMass teammates Hockenbrock, Jelley and Salisbury. Freshman Sharon Hughes (Barnstable, MA) will also see action at midfield. "The returning midfielders have developed and improved tremendously," says Hixon. "Holly will have to step up as the leader of the group, and Kyle and Andrea will provide some depth."

DEFENSE: With the loss of two Northeast Region All-America first team selections in Joy Blenis and Kathy Phelan, the UMass defense will look to rebuild. The Minutewomen, however, return two starters in senior captain Tracy Barclay (Newville, PA) and junior Natalie Hart (London, England). In 1992, Barclay and Hart played integral roles in the UMass defense that held opponents to only 13 goals all season and less than four penalty corners per game. Both players started in 23 games last season, and Hart added 11 points on five goals and one assist. Senior Sherry Doiron (Kitchener, Ontario), junior Kyri Sparks (Davis, CA) and freshman Melanie Gore (Brewster, MA) will also see action. Doiron played in 10 games last season and scored one goal, while Sparks played in four contests. "Our defense will need to rebuild," says Hixon. "Tracy and Natalie offer experience, but we need time to develop and mature into a good defensive team like we had in 1992."

GOALIE: The Minutewomen will have a tandem of first-year players in goal. Freshman Hilary Rose (Bury St. Edmunds, England) will be the starter in 1993. A member of the England National Field Hockey Team, she has also represented her country as a member of the Under-21 squad. Sophomore Stacy Walker (Accord, NY), who was redshirted in 1992, will serve as Rose's backup. Hixon comments: "Hilary will maintain the quality of goalkeeping consistency that we have had over the years, and Stacy will offer excellent support behind her."
