The University of Massachusetts appointed Eric Carcich as head rowing coach on July 17, 2019. Carcich, a 1996 alumnus of the university, returned to Amherst six years ago after directing the Cornell Women’s rowing program.
Carcich, who is in his seventh season at UMass in 2025-26, helped bring the program back to being a perennial contender within the A-10 Conference and will now guide the team into the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
During his time at UMass, the team rose from fourth to second, accumulating 12 medals across the five championships (Covid year excluded). The team has also grown from being a strong regional team to becoming a global family with athletes from over 12 countries. His staff have been very intentional in their build, creating a dynamic culture that is ready to enter the MAC fully prepared to compete for a championship.
Prior to arriving at UMass, Carcich spent a year in Ithaca, New York, leading the Cornell women’s rowing program. He made an immediate impact in his lone year at Cornell, helping the Big Red show marked improvement and accomplish results not seen since 2013. The Ivy League honored both Sheehan Gotsch and Jaquelyn Shroyer of the varsity eight with All-Ivy recognition at the conclusion of the season.
In addition to Cornell, Carcich was the head women’s rowing coach at George Washington (2009-18), where he earned back-to-back Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors in 2012 and 2013. Carcich turned the program into a contender in the Atlantic 10 with four top-three finishes in his final six years. In 2017, all of GW’s boats medaled at the A-10 Championships for the first time ever en route to a program-record 44 points. The following year, the Colonials posted record finishes at the Princeton Chase, Murphy Cup, Knecht Cup, and Mason Invite.
Prior to that, Carcich served as assistant men’s heavyweight rowing coach at Penn (2006-09) and as assistant men’s lightweight rowing coach at Yale (1999-2006). Carcich made his first foray into the head coaching world at UMass, taking the reins of the men’s club program in 1997 following one season leading the men’s freshmen club squad.
The Albany, New York native earned his Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) and holds US Rowing Level 1, 2, and 3 certifications. He and his wife, Jen, have one daughter, Violet (six years old), and a son, Wilder (eight years old).
