A dedicated in-game tactician with off-the-court focus into recruiting, scouting and civic involvement, Andy Allison carries a long-standing partnership with head coach Derek Kellogg into Allison’s third season as an assistant on Kellogg’s University of Massachusetts men’s basketball coaching staff.Â
The 2016-17 campaign is Allison’s eighth overall year with the Minutemen while his tenure at UMass marks his third stop with Kellogg, who he also worked alongside at Youngstown State and Memphis. Before his elevation to assistant coach, Allison was the Director of Operations at UMass from 2008-14.
Â
Allison’s 16-year wealth of experience in collegiate men’s basketball coaching and administration across five NCAA institutions has helped Kellogg return the Minutemen to prominence through three national postseason berths and an average of more than 20 wins per season over the last half-decade alone.
Â
In 2013-14, UMass opened the year with 10 consecutive wins and vaulted into the national rankings for the first time since 1998, as the squad climbed as high as 13th in the Associated Press and 12th in the USA Today Coaches poll. The team finished the year in the NCAA Tournament Second Round as a No. 6 seed and earned 24 victories.
Â
The year prior, the Minutemen posted 21 wins and earned their second NIT appearance in as many seasons. It followed up a 2011-12 campaign during which Massachusetts went 25-11, advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship and reached the NIT Final Four.
Â
In addition to his dedication to on-court improvement and success through individualized player skill development programs, Allison is equally as focused on civic involvement through charitable work with a wide range of organizations, including Atlanticare, the American Cancer Society, the Humane Society of Atlantic County, MBCA and Tara Miller Foundation.
Â
Before accepting a promotion into a coaching role ahead of the 2014-15 season, Allison assisted the Minutemen on the program’s operational and administrative side. He oversaw all facets of the Derek Kellogg Basketball School, handled team travel preparations and worked alongside the academic services staff to ensure student-athlete success in the classroom.
Â
Prior to his arrival at UMass, Allison was an integral part of the Memphis men’s basketball program during the most historic run of success in the Tigers’ history. He managed the John Calipari Basketball School and clinics and was involved in a multitude of operational tasks and functions.Â
Â
Allison witnessed Memphis’ magical 2007-08 campaign, which culminated with an appearance in the NCAA Championship Game. The squad’s Final Four appearance was the Tigers' first since 1985, and the NCAA title contest was the program's first since 1973.
Â
In 2007-08, Memphis set an NCAA single-season record for victories with 38 wins (38-2 mark) and held down the No. 1 spot in the national polls for five consecutive weeks during the season. The Tigers finished 2007-08 at No. 2 overall in the country, the highest final ranking in school history. Memphis also won a school-record 26 straight games, and swept the Conference USA regular season and tournament titles for a third consecutive season. The Tigers won 30 games for a third-straight year in 2007-08, becoming the second school in NCAA Division I history to accomplish the feat.
Â
One year prior, Allison was a part of another record-setting campaign. The Tigers won a school-record tying 33 games for a second-straight season and captured their second-consecutive Conference USA regular season and tournament titles. The back-to-back outright regular season crowns were a first for the Memphis program, and the consecutive tournament championships were the Tigers first since a pair of Metro Conference titles in 1984 and 1985.
Â
Allison helped the 2006-07 Tigers accomplish a first in Conference USA history as Memphis posted a perfect 16-0 regular season mark and simultaneously captured the league's postseason tournament. The Tigers received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and finished in the top 10 in the national polls (No. 5/AP; No. 7/ESPN-USA Today).
Â
The 2005-06 season set the stage for Memphis men’s basketball illustrious run, fueled in part of Allison and Kellogg. Memphis secured a 33-4 record and won the Conference USA regular season and tournament titles. The 33 victories set a school single-season record while the sweep of the C-USA regular season and tournament crowns went as the first since 1984-85. The 2005-06 Memphis squad earned the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1992.
Â
Allison’s involvement in Tigers basketball began with his first stint on-staff as a graduate assistant during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.
Â
In 2001-02, Memphis went 27-9 and won the National Invitation Tournament. In the following campaign, the Tigers earned their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1996.
Â
In between his tenures at Memphis, Allison served one season as the Director of Basketball Operations at Western Kentucky in 2003-04. That year, the Hilltoppers finished second in the Sun Belt East, earned a berth into the year-end conference tournament.
Â
Allison earned his inaugural collegiate coaching position prior to his first stint at Memphis when he served as an assistant on the Mount Union College staff. He was also the head coach of the program's junior varsity squad.
Â
Allison earned a bachelor's degree in education from Youngstown State University in 2000. He married his longtime sweetheart, Jocelyn, during the summer, 2009. He is the son of Al and B.J. Allison, and has one sister, Beth.
