Matt Reynolds, a former infielder and captain for the Minutemen, was named the 15th head coach in the history of the University of Massachusetts baseball program on May 26, 2017. The 2026 season will mark Reynolds ninth season at the helm.
Reynolds led the Minutemen to a 24-29 overall record in the 2024 season, while going 13-11 in the Atlantic 10. UMass returned to the A-10 Championships for the first time since 2012, seeded sixth, marking the first trip with Reynolds at the helm. Earlier in the year, Massachusetts knocked off the then-ranked No. 13 Virginia with a 10-5 victory, and went on to win its first non-conference series of the season at Seton Hall with a 5-2 win and an 11-1 triumph in a doubleheader. The Minutemen picked up four A-10 Conference series wins throughout the year, including back-to-back series sweeps over Saint Joseph's (4/26-28) and St. Bonaventure (5/3-4).
During the season, three Minutemen earned four A-10 weekly honors. Carter Hanson received A-10 Player of the Week, while Braden Sullivan tabbed A-10 Rookie of the Week. Sullivan became the first Minuteman to garner the award since former Minuteman Collin Shapiro in 2019. Robbie O'Connor collected both A-10 Rookie of the Week and A-10 Pitcher of the Week, becoming the first Minuteman pitcher to achieve the accolade since Justin Lasko in 2019.
Additionally, five members were honored by the A-10 with postseason awards. Mike Gervasi was named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team as a designated hitter, Jack Beverly and Austin Burgess were placed on the A-10 All-Academic Team and Justin Masteralexis and O'Connor were tabbed to the A-10 All-Rookie Team. Hanson, Beverly and Kevin Skagerlind earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators 2024 Academic All-District Team, as well. Gervasi was also selected to the American Baseball Coaces Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Northeast All-Region Second Team, as a designated hitter. He became the first Minuteman to earn an ABCA All-Region nod since Joe Popielarczyk was honored in 2012, the first designated hitter to receive the accolade since Jim Macdonald was placed on the second team in 2009 and the first player to collect the honor with Reynolds as the head coach.
The 2022 season saw the Minutemen make significant strides as Reynolds earned his first 20-plus win season, picking up 22 victories for the first time since 2012. During the season, UMass returned to the Beanpot Finals with a matchup against Boston College, while also tabbing a spot on the NEIBA DIvision I Coaches Poll in back-to-back weeks, with the highest ranking of No. 2.
Capping off the season, graduate student Drew DeMartino garnered Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors, becoming the first Massachusetts player to notch the accolade since 2016, while freshman Will MacLean became the third player under Reynolds to be selected to the A-10 All-Rookie Team. Graduate student Cole Hebble also added his name to the A-10 All-Academic team list, after achieving A-10 Player of the Week (4/4/22) and Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week (4/4/22) recognition, and landing on the Brooks Wallace Award Watchlist.
Reynolds’ ball club took another step forward in the 2019 season with its first Beanpot Championship since 2012. The Minutemen were 4-1 against teams that ultimately reached the NCAA Tournament and continued to show upward momentum as the year progressed. Senior ace Justin Lasko was drafted and signed with the New York Mets and left Amherst in possession of multiple program records, including starts (48), innings pitched (311.1) and strikeouts (247). After a brief stint in the New York-Penn League, Lasko was assigned to Class A Columbia in Summer 2019.
Following the campaign, both Lasko (All-Academic Team) and redshirt freshman left fielder Collin Shapiro (All-Rookie Team) collected Atlantic 10 postseason awards. Lasko was also honored by UMass Athletics with the Spring 2019 Scholar-Athlete Award, capping his career with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.64.
In 2018, Reynolds’ first season at the helm, the Maroon and White displayed signs of a promising future with the program’s best start to a season since 1997. On the mound, freshman Sean Harney collected All-Rookie Team recognition from the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Reynolds returned to his alma mater after a three-year stint as head coach at Washington College (2015-17) in Chestertown, Maryland, and seven seasons as an assistant coach at Navy (2008-14). In his first season as head coach, he guided the Shoremen to their first winning record in three years (19-15). He followed that performance up with a 26-win effort in 2016, the team's second-highest win total ever.
Reynolds spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he focused on the squad's hitters, infield and outfield defense and coached third base. He coached a Patriot League Rookie of the Year and a Patriot League Player of the Year and a number of All-Patriot League players and Major League Baseball draft picks during his time at Navy.
With Reynolds providing hitting instruction, the Midshipmen set a number of offensive team records and top 10 all-time team totals during his tenure. In his first season, the Midshipmen broke school records for hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and total bases.
Reynolds, while maintaining full-time coaching responsibilities, served as an active duty Commissioned Officer and Physical Education Instructor at the Naval Academy. He stood as the Physical Education Duty Officer, opening and securing Physical Education buildings and remaining on-call on a bi-weekly basis to respond to any facility issues. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties as an instructor and coach.
Reynolds served as a graduate assistant under Mike Stone at UMass for three seasons (2005-07). He worked with infielders and hitters while assisting with recruiting. He played his final two collegiate seasons in Amherst after transferring from the University of Maine. He earned Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team honors in 2003 and was named the Minutemen's Most Valuable Player the following season.
A native of South Boston, Massachusetts, Reynolds holds bachelor's (communication, 2005) and master's (education technology, 2010) degrees from UMass. He currently resides in Belchertown, Mass., with his wife, Alexandra, his son, Jack, and daughter, Cara.
