UMass Community Salute
Congratulations to all of our 2016-17 UMass Community Salute recipients! Thanks to the Massachusetts Lottery, we were able to recognize five extremely deserving members of the UMass community throughout the course of the UMass Men’s Basketball season.The Massachusetts Lottery represents 351 cities and towns and returned over $989 million in net profit to the Commonwealth. These funds flowed back to those respective cities and towns in Massachusetts to help pay for local improvement projects, public safety and education initiatives.
Here’s a closer look at our 2016-17 recipients and the contributions they’ve made to our community:

January 28, 2017
Dr. Halgin
Dr. Halgin is a professor in the UMass Psychological and Brain Sciences Department. For more than two decades, he has served as faculty mentor for the UMass Hockey Team, and more recently for the brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. In this role, Dr. Halgin has provided these young men with group lectures and private consults to help them embrace the challenges each of them face as students, with the goal of helping them become better men and to have a positive impact on the world around them.

Wilmore Webley
Wilmore is the director of pre-med advising in the UMass Microbiology Department. Since 2003 he has served as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County. Wilmore was a major influence in teaching his mentee Amari, now a college junior, that an education provides great opportunity. Amari learned from Wilmore that “other things come and go, but your education stays with you forever.” Wilmore is now a dedicated member of the organization’s Advisory Board, helping to propel the organization forward and recruit sorely needed new volunteers.

Chazz Davis
For the last nine years, Chazz has served as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County. In addition, he volunteers in Mass Mutual’s Career Pathways Program which introduces local high school students to potential career opportunities. Over the last 8 years Chazz has also been coaching under Springfield Youth Athletics. He now serves as Head Coach for 5A Bulldogs and assists with 5th and 6th grade basketball. He also promotes literacy by volunteering to read to elementary school classes twice a month through Springfield School Volunteers.

Jonathan Scagel
Jonathan has dedicated his career to educating our community’s youth, serving as a teacher at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School in Northampton. In addition he has volunteered as a coach in Western Mass for the past 25 years, primarily in soccer and basketball. Jonathan has also been extremely active in the overall promotion of local youth sports by serving as the President of Western Mass Athletics, a youth soccer and basketball organization.

Jim Kelly
Jim is a UMass graduate and the CEO of The Polish National Credit Union. In this role he leads the credit union in its community outreach initiatives in the Chicopee area such as supporting Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen, and gifting a bookmobile for the Chicopee Library. Jim oversees an intern program with Chicopee Comp High School that provides students with valuable work experience through college. Jim also provides financial assistance to traveling youth hockey teams, and in 2015 earned the Paul Harris Award for Community Service from the Chicopee Chamber of Commerce.
