Atlantic 10 Shootout Comes To UMass

Feb. 28, 2001

AMHERST, Mass. -- The inaugural Atlantic 10 ShootOut comes to the University of Massachusetts this week. The Atlantic 10 and official sponsors GMAC, Chevrolet, Verizon, US Airways and presenting sponsor Irish Spring are bringing this unique conference-wide tour event and competition to each Atlantic 10 campus.

The Atlantic 10 ShootOut is a co-ed hoop shooting competition that is free and open to all students attending Atlantic 10 institutions. The competition features a two-person team comprised of one male and one female shooting alternating shots from one of six designated spots on the floor, all with point values based on difficulty. The object is to score as many points as possible within the time allowed.

Students can register through the Atlantic 10's website (www.atlantic10.org) or through the intramural office. Preliminary round competition will be held at Curry Hicks Cage on Thursday, March 1, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The four highest scoring teams will advance to the campus final at halftime of the March 3 men's basketball game between UMass and St. Bonaventure.

Each of the 11 campus champions will be brought to Philadelphia -- courtesy of US Airways -- to compete for the overall crown at the Verizon Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship at the First Union Spectrum. The members of the winning team will win their own two-year lease on a 2001 Chevy Tracker.
