MEN'S BASKETBALL: Focus on No. 1 UConn
Boston Globe / By Frank Dell'Apa
After 15 years of competing against University of Connecticut teams, Steve Lappas should be better prepared than most coaches to confront the Huskies. But coaching experience and preparation might not be enough for Lappas's University of Massachusetts team in tonight's game against UConn in Hartford. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: UMass faces UConn
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
As the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team prepares to play Connecticut, one of New England's most time-tested series lends itself to a question. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: The best of UMass may not be enough
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts' 82-66 win over Albany hadn't been over long, but the Minutemen were already thinking ahead to Tuesday's matchup with No. 1 Connecticut (Hartford Civic Center, 7 p.m.). . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Less depth for UMass
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team hopes nine is enough. The Minutemen are trying to make it through an entire season with only nine scholarship players, four under the NCAA maximum. To coach Steve Lappas, it's a challenge born out of necessity, not preference. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: On the learning curve
Albany Times Union / By Mark Singelais
AMHERST, Mass. - Rashaun Freeman went home to Schenectady for Christmas and gave the grandmother who raised him a present greater than anything he's done on the basketball court. It was a plaque congratulating Freeman for having a 3.5 grade-point average, the highest on the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team last spring. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: UMass set for Albany
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - At home in Lynn for Christmas, University of Massachusetts senior point guard Anthony Anderson's friends asked him for tickets to Tuesday's game against No. 1 Connecticut. Anderson turned them down, temporarily. It's not that he wasn't feeling generous. He said he just wasn't allowing himself to spend any time thinking about the Huskies yet. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Freeman brings finesse
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
AMHERST, Mass. - Rashaun Freeman came to the University of Massachusetts men's basketball program with a reputation as a muscleman, able to dominate the interior with sheer ferocity and brawn. That description hasn't been wrong, but it has been incomplete. Eight games into his college career, the 6-foot-8, 255-pound power forward is displaying not only strength but finesse, leading to suggestions he may already be the best UMass low-post player since Tyrone Weeks. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Freeman post operative
Boston Globe / By Joe Burris
AMHERST, Mass. - Solid footwork has become so scarce among college basketball power forwards and centers that nowadays the word `pivot' describes what position a player takes on the court but scarcely what he does. That is what makes UMass forward Rashaun Freeman a must-see. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bowers ready for Maine
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team finally will be close to full strength against Maine at 7 tonight in the Mullins Center. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: UMass' sign: Caution
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
AMHERST, Mass. - Since beginning the season with five new players, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas has been walking a delicate public tightrope. . .

ICE HOCKEY: Winer has knack in net for UMass
Boston Globe / By Paul Harber
AMHERST, Mass. - Gabe Winer thrives in net. He wants to be tested. The 20-year-old Stoughton native, who is a sophomore goalie on the University of Massachusetts hockey team, savors 100-mile-an-hour pucks fired in his direction. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Minutemen put it together
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
The University of Massachusetts men's basketball program will spend nearly $200,000 this season, paying opponents to provide preseason competition and presumably beatable regular-season opposition. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Minutemen set after long layoff
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
They've had rest, some time to practice, and some time to heal. For the players and coaches of the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team, today's game against Marshall represents a chance to start setting things right again, against a team that had given them trouble in the past. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: UMass welcomes Marshall, Marcum
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - The last time the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team played a game, Saddam Hussein was still at large and most people believed that Alex Rodriguez coming to Boston was inevitable. It's only been 11 days, but a lot has changed since then. . .

ICE HOCKEY: Ex-goalie loving life
Springfield Republican / By Dick Baker
It was New Years Eve nine years ago when Brian Regan had one of his most memorable moment as the University of Massachusetts goaltender. It was UMass' first year as a member of Hockey East, and the Minutemen were 0-13-1 overall when they finally sneaked into the victory column by beating Notre Dame 4-3 in overtime with Regan in goal at the Mullins Center. . .
SOFTBALL: Honor catches UMass's Sortino by surprise
Boston Globe / By Patty Topliffe
Every year, on the last day of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association convention, the Hall of Fame inductees are announced. And every year, University of Massachusetts softball coach Elaine Sortino would sit in the back of the convention hall minding her business while the announcements were made. . .

FOOTBALL: Whipple reloads for '04
Springfield Republican / By Gary Brown
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts football coach Mark Whipple doesn't have time for Colgate-Delaware. He won't go to the game, and he doesn't care who wins. . .
UMASS: Five-year plan for athletics, UMass president outlines strategy
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts will prepare a five-year plan for athletics, including delaying a final decision on upgrading football to Division I-A, Chancellor John V. Lombardi said Wednesday. . .

FOOTBALL: Busy Minuteman All-America choice
Springfield Republican / By Jeff Thomas
AMHERST, Mass. - The college football season may be over for Jeremy Cain and the University of Massachusetts, but that doesn't mean time for relaxation. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lappas remains upbeat
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas admitted he didn't have 2-4 in mind when he thought about how his team would start this season. But despite the early struggles, Lappas believes his team is heading in the right direction. . .

ICE HOCKEY: Final minutes leave UMass chilled
Boston Herald / By John Connolly
AMHERST, Mass. - Sometimes an emerging hockey program has to experience growing pains. Road blocks can appear in the form of an errant puck hitting a post or an untimely penalty. . .
ICE HOCKEY: UNH, UMass all tied up
Boston Globe / By Paul Harber
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior defenseman Thomas Pock was here in the not-so-good-old days, when a tie with a team like New Hampshire was something to celebrate. But last night, New Hampshire, last year's NCAA finalist, was the team that was happy to escape the Mullins Center with a tie. . .
ICE HOCKEY: UMass ties UNH
Springfield Republican / By Dick Baker
AMHERST, Mass. - The game appeared all but over, as soundly outplayed New Hampshire had little left. But a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty to the University of Massachusetts with 1:40 reamining in regulation turned what looked like a spectacular win into a 2-2 overtime tie before 4,341 at the Mullins Center. . .
ICE HOCKEY: Tie not good enough
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - It wasn't that long ago that 1,700 University of Massachusetts fans would have left the Mullins Center elated after seeing the Minutemen tie the No. 5 team in the country. But last night as the scoreboard read 2-2, the 4,300 folks departing the draw between UMass and New Hampshire were instead disappointed. . .
ICE HOCKEY: Late goal ties UMass
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Christina Bousquet
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts sophomore goaltender Gabe Winer did his best circus acrobat impression on Thursday. Unfortunately for Winer and the Minutemen, New Hampshire netminder Mike Ayers gave a similar performance. . .
MEN'S INDOOR TRACK: Back to the track
Daily Collegain / By Brendan Hall
After a one-year hiatus, the Massachusetts men's indoor track squad will be back in action this winter, picking up where it left off after being eliminated from the athletic program in 2002. . .
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Time to bounce
Daily Collegain / By Bob McGovern
The word rebound has a double meaning in basketball. In order for the Massachusetts women's basketball team to have a positive trip to Northeastern this weekend, they'll need to both rebound on the court, and rebound from their early season woes. . .

ICE HOCKEY: UMass gaining respect in league
Springfield Republican / By Dick Baker
While the big names on the University of Massachusetts hockey team are Thomas Pock and Greg Mauldin, there are others who are gaining respect around Hockey East. One of those is sophomore defenseman Marvin Degon, a 5 foot 11, 175 pounder, who plays much bigger than his size. . .
ICE HOCKEY: UMass looks to tame 'Cats
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - The last time the Universities of Massachusetts and New Hampshire met, the heavy underdog Minutemen were trying to make history, while the Wildcats were on their way to the league title and eventually the NCAA finals. . .
ICE HOCKEY: Rematch!
Daily Collegian / By Andrew Merritt
It's been 12 days since the No. 8 Massachusetts hockey team last played a game, 16 days since the Minutemen's last win, and 22 days since their last game against a Hockey East team. Needless to say, they're ready to get back to hockey. They'll get that chance tonight when the No. 5 New Hampshire Wildcats visit the Mullins Center (7 p.m.). . .
FOOTBALL: Minutemen delay move to I-A level
Springfield Republican / By Jeff Thomas
A special committee on athletics has advised the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees to delay any move to Division I-A football for at least three years. The committee, chaired by alumnus Robert Meers and trustee James Karam, met yesterday at the UMass president's office in Boston. With the guidance of a report prepared by consultants Grenzebach Glier & Associates, Inc., the committee recommended UMass-Amherst should stay at the I-AA level for at least 3-5 years but lay the groundwork for elevating the program for when the time is right. . .
FOOTBALL: A-1 out for now, UMass football's move goes back to drawing board
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
Almost three months after Chancellor John V. Lombardi said a decision would be forthcoming on upgrading the University of Massachusetts program, the issue remains unresolved. . .

Heading into the holiday season, the Massachusetts swimming and diving teams have much to celebrate. The Minutemen (3-0) are coming off an impressive showing at the Nutmeg Invitational, where the squad captured 12 events during the three-day competition. . .

FOOTBALL: UMass ponders change
Springfield Republican / By Jeff Thomas
While no immediate decision will likely result from a subcommittee's findings on the viability of the University of Massachusetts upgrading to Division I-A football, the result could have a strong impact on the Amherst campus. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Minutemen gamble with thin lineup
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - The already thin University of Massachusetts men's basketball roster will be even thinner when the Minutemen take the floor at 7:30 tonight against Central Connecticut State at Mohegan Sun. Freshman guard Artie Bowers, who sprained his ankle Saturday against Boston College, will not play against the Blue Devils. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Sellers faces former team
Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
AMHERST, Mass. - Pat Sellers seemed to miss the point of the adage ''If you can't beat 'em, join em.'' Last year as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State, his alma mater, Sellers helped the Blue Devils beat the University of Massachusetts. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Minutemen seem to be shorthanded
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
For at least tonight's men's basketball game against Central Connecticut State, the University of Massachusetts will try to do more with less. The Minutemen will be without freshman guard Artie Bowers, leaving only eight scholarship players available for the game at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. In 16 years of coaching, UMass coach Steve Lappas has never had so few scholarship players available, and the season is only three weeks old. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: UM heads to Mohegan Sun
Daily Collegian / By Becky Horowitz
The Massachusetts men's basketball team will have to rely on its youth and depth in tonight's game against Central Connecticut State (1-1) at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Due to injury, the Minutemen's backcourt depth has been cut from four players to three. . .

Daily Hampshire Gazette / By Matt Vautour
BOSTON, Mass. - The good news for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team is that freshman guard Artie Bowers' injured right ankle wasn't broken Saturday. X-rays taken after the game revealed no fractures. . .

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - University of Massachusetts big man Gabe Lee had not yet been asked about his missed free throws late in overtime, but he was ready to take responsibility for them after the Minutemen lost to Boston College 76-75 Saturday at Conte Forum. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Close call for Eagles
Boston Globe / By Joe Burris
They know they've improved over recent years, and the hope is that by season's end their record will substantiate that claim. Many who saw the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in a 76-75 overtime loss at Boston College in yesterday's Commonwealth Classic are already convinced. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: BC takes OT thriller
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
BOSTON, Mass. - It all came down to a few missed free throws and a couple of missed shots from the floor, any of which could have won the game. University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas said when a team puts itself in position to win, it can ask no more of itself - even when the shots don't fall. . .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Despite snow, show had to go on
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
BOSTON, Mass. - Yesterday's men's basketball game at Conte Forum went on as scheduled, even as stormy weather otherwise brought New England to a virtual standstill. .
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Patience will be worth wait
Springfield Republican / By Ron Chimelis
By any fair measure, this game represented real progress. I'm not sure everyone who follows University of Massachusetts men's basketball will see it that way, much as I think they should. To many fans who tuned out UMass hoops some time ago, yesterday's 76-75 overtime loss to Boston College will be seen not just as another defeat, but an unusually painful one, a win that got away. . .

There weren't a lot of people on hand to watch yesterday's Commonwealth Classic because of the weather, but Boston College and UMass lit up Conte Forum with a game that could bring the excitement back to the intrastate rivalry. . .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Not quite `Classic': BC-UMass is still a rivalry
Boston Herald / By Mike Shalin
Someday, the Commonwealth Classic may again recapture the excitement of the first games of the series between Boston College and UMass. But for now, today's annual meeting is just another game between two neighboring teams. . .

Just because it's no longer called the Commonwealth Classic doesn't mean this game is common. It's still the University of Massachusetts against Boston College, although at times, today's men's basketball game at Conte Forum may look more like a Nike camp all-star game than a college contest. . .

Swagger. The 2003 Minutemen had it from day one. Beginning in the searing August heat during two-a-days and lasting until the bitter, snow-covered end in upstate New York, every time the members of the UMass football team stepped on a field, they did so knowing they could win. . .

In the end, the first-round playoff loss to Colgate was a lot like the regular season of the University of Massachusetts condensed into 60 minutes. The defense played well enough for a win, the offense struggled and the kicking game was a mixed bag in Saturday's 19-7 loss to Colgate at Hamilton, N.Y. . .
