By Friday, the fifth-ranked University of Massachusetts team had arrived in upstate New York primed for the first round of the Division 1-AA football playoffs. The Minutemen clung to a positive mind-set yesterday during the two hours it took to drive through a snowstorm from their hotel in downtown Syracuse to Colgate University -- a trip that usually takes 50 minutes. . .

AMHERST, Mass. - If ever there was a pitfall game for the University of Massachusetts football team, this is it. Richmond comes to McGuirk Alumni Stadium most likely minus its starting quarterback and holding a record of 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the Atlantic 10. UMass (8-1, 6-0) is ranked fourth nationally in Div. I-AA and has a huge game next Saturday at undefeated Delaware in a game that will most likely decide the A-10 Conference championship. . .
