Andrew Cyr with the Daily Collegian spoke to UMass rowing head coach Jim Dietz about the team's performance at the NCAA Championships, where the Minutewomen competed from Friday, May 30 through Sunday, June 1.
"The Massachusetts rowing team didn't know what to expect when it traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 2014 NCAA Championships.
Although the streets of the city may not have been as crowded as it was when Indianapolis hosted the Super Bowl a few years ago, the sights and sounds were nothing like the Minutewomen had even seen before.
'With the young squad we had, I think it was a lot like a case of taking a little kid to the circus for the first time,' UMass coach Jim Dietz said.
'(Our) eyes were bugged open and they were living the dream,' he added..."

The Daily Collegian spoke with UMass rowing head coach Jim Dietz following a successful weekend at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, N.J., where the Minutewomen took home three gold medals. Check out Dietz's thoughts on the performance below:
"The Massachusetts rowing team spent hours upon hours in training, checked the forecast for the weekend and spent time creating the best possible lineups; but they still encountered a one condition they had not prepared for: food poisoning.
"At least six of the women on the team got food poisoning before the event," said UMass coach Jim Dietz, who also suffered from the illness. "We were all up in the middle of the night in really bad shape, but by the time they got to the finals this afternoon they had recovered pretty well and we did well."
Despite the illness, the Minutewomen were still achieved three first-place finishes at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, N.J., this weekend, earning gold in the varsity eight, varsity four and varsity pair..."

Andrew Zackman recapped UMass rowing's participation in the Head of the Charles Regatta for the
Daily Collegian, highlighting the success of the lightweight four boat, which took second place at the prestigious race that hosts thousands of competitors over the two-day event.
The Massachusetts rowing team had the unique opportunity to race in the Head of the Charles Regatta this past weekend in Boston, competing in the world's largest two-day race which hosts over 9,000 competitors and more than 300,000 fans.
The Minutewomen had five boats race in both days of the regatta and had much better results in this year's race than last year, according to UMass coach Jim Dietz.
This year, the lightweight fours boat comprised of coxswain Emily Hajjar, Allanah Rubi-Mooney, Nicole Juul-Hindsgaul Emily Mann and Taryn Wilson finished in second place with a time of 19:59:851. That was over 10 seconds better than last year's time of 20:10:281, which put them in seventh place...
