"This is huge for him. Coming off a year where he hadn't practiced or played coming in halfway through, I think he was a little disappointed with his productivity and his playing time," Derek Kellogg said. "It's been fantastic. He's grown up. His body is in phenomenal shape. He has a chance to do some good things if he can continue at the pace he's been at."

Former UMass football standout Jeremy Horne was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad on Wednesday after being put on waivers on Tuesday. Horne had played in three games on the active roster this season after playing in three the previous season as well.

The Minutewomen defeated La Salle at home 2-0 and then went to previously unbeaten in A-10 play Temple, winning 2-1 in overtime in an impressive come-from-behind win.
"Our confidence is pretty high right now, once A-10 play started we had a new mind-set and knew that we needed to play well to move on to the postseason," said senior All-American goalie Alesha Widdall.

Former UMass All-American Jonathan Quick made headlines over the weekend as he reached his 100th career win in the midst of a three-game shutout streak for the L.A. Kings. Quick earned win No. 100 in a 2-0 win over Phoenix. Cameron McDonough of the Massachusetts Daily Collegian has a story in Wednesday's edition on the UMass women's tennis players that have been invited to compete at the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional this weekend at Yale. Following an offseason where University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg put heavy emphasis on conditioning, the Minutemen are going to put that stamina to good use.
Kellogg plans to change his offense into one that will run and press more.
"We have a roster of guys that can play that way. It's something I've always wanted to do," Kellogg said. "We have to use our length, our athleticism and our speed. We finally have a fast team of longer, more athletic guys that need to get out and run."

Victor Cruz was center stage again for the New York Giants in their 36-25 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The former UMass wide receiver led the Giants with eight receptions for 161 yards, including a juggling one-handed 68-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter. James Ighedibo made the first start of his career at safety for the New England Patriots, helping lead them to victory over his former team, the New York Jets, 30-20. The Amherst Regional High and UMass alum played the first four seasons of his career with the Jets, so Sunday's first start took on extra meaning. Ighedibo finished with six tackles on four solos and two assists.
The Massachusetts women's soccer team, riding a five-game winning streak, will take its first long distance road trip of the season and travel to Charlotte, N.C. and St. Louis, Mo. this weekend for a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference games.
The first of these games at Charlotte (3-6-3, 0-1 A-10) will be held under the lights Friday at 7 p.m. Charlotte is most recently coming off of a 2-1 loss to St. Louis in their own conference opener.
The 49ers are led by preseason All-Conference selection Macky Wingo, who leads the team with 11 points this season (four goals, three assists).
Much like the Minutewomen (7-2-2, 1-0 A-10), the 49ers have had some trouble putting up big offensive numbers, only managing to score 13 total goals in their first 12 games. Comparatively, UMass has 12 goals in its first 11 games.
What separates these two teams is on the defensive side of the ball. While the Minutewomen might not score often, they have been able to count on a solid defensive effort game in and game out, allowing just eight goals in 11 games.

UMass basketball alum Tony Gaffney, like Ricky Harris, picked up a win with his team, Telekom Baskets Bonn, in its season opener in the Beko Basketball League, a professional league in Germany. Gaffney started and scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in a 80-76 victory over Bayern Munich. The former UMass star had the highlight of the game with a thunderous two-handed dunk in the second half that brought the crowd to its feet.
UMass basketball alum Ricky Harris made a splash in his season opener with the German professional team S.Oliver Wurzburg. The third all-time leading scorer in UMass history had a game-high 18 points to lead his team to a 74-67 victory in the opener of the Beko Basketball League.
Harris started last season in Lithuania with BC Siaualiai before moving to Ferro-ZNTU in the Ukrainian League where he averaged 10 points per game.

Berra set the record in 1973 against Rhode Island until Julmiste's 252 yard effort last weekend.
