Here are the recaps from Sunday's loss at La Salle.
Here are previews about the #11 UMass vs #13 Ohio State men's lacrosse battle set for Saturday at Garber Field.

The Jaguars signed long snapper and UMass alum Jeremy Cain to a new contract on Thursday. Cain was set to become a free agent once a knew collective bargaining agreement exists.
Cain is the second potential free agent the Jaguars locked in for next season. On Wednesday the organization applied the franchise tag to tight end Marcedes Lewis. Since the tag is non-exclusive, Lewis can still negotiate with other teams, but another team would have to give the Jaguars two first-round draft picks to sign him.
Cain has been with the Jaguars for two seasons after being claimed off waivers from Washington in 2009. He played in all 32 games in the past two seasons.
This is Cain's fifth year in the NFL. He began his career as a rookie free agent whom Chicago signed in 2004.
Sully's Court: UMass fans should be optimistic
Considering UMass: I saw UMass in person Wednesday night as they pummeled St. Joe's. A reasonable goal for this team is to get a home game for the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament, then win to advance to the quarterfinals in Atlantic City.
The record is better than last season, there is improvement, but what about the future?
I realize my observations come the day after UMass played well against a bad team but I think there's a reason for optimism. IT it revolves around four players, sophomores Javorn Farrell, Freddie Riley and Terrell Vinson and redshirt freshman Raphial Putney. Farrell has the makings of a excellent slashing scorer. Riley didn't play Wednesday night but he's a legit 3-point threat. Putney is really intriguing, a stick figure in basketball shorts who has 3-point range on his outside shot and long, long arms that can be used effectively at both ends of the court. I think he's got all sorts of potential. Vinson is a riddle. He has to become an assertive inside player and he can do it. Not sure he will though.
The obvious question here: where will the guard play come from? The answer was sitting on the bench in 5-foot-9-inch point guard Chazz Williams. Williams played at Hofstra in 2009-2010 and was all-rookie in the CAA after averaging 7.1 ppg and 4.2 apg. He's actually just what the other four players need, someone who can facilitate.
So I say, have hope, UMass fans. And how about showing up for the games? The Sign Man is getting lonely.
Interesting reflection: UMass absolutely pounded St. Joe's on the glass, 45-24. The Hawks need some inside players. Sitting out right now is another Hofstra transfer, 6-8 forward Halil Kanacevic, who was also on the All-CAA rookie team after averaging 8.6 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Phil Martelli will be ecstatic to have a player who will attack the glass on the defensive end. Both players left Hofstra when Tom Pecora moved over to coach Fordham. Pecora, winless in the Atlantic 10, could have used both players at Rose Hill.

On Friday, February 18, 2011, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons presented Julius Erving with Hennessy's Privilege Award. The award was created in 2003 and serves as recognition for outstanding individuals who give back to their communities through service, leadership or the arts. Just a few moments before the award ceremony, Julius Erving managed to squeeze some time out of his busy schedule and settle down for an interview with Clayton Perry - reflecting on the importance of service, the need for mentorship, and the dynamic relationship between basketball and hip-hop.

Morgan and Putney are offering new life to this roller-coaster ride of a University of Massachusetts men's basketball season. What they lack in experience, they are overcoming with their energy level, jarring a team that had seemed to be turning stale.
"They are bringing a freshness with their play and demeanor,'' UMass coach Derek Kellogg said as the Minutemen got ready for Wednesday's home game against Saint Joseph's. "Their eyes are always on me, saying 'Put me in.' I like that.''

Also, Lacrosse Magazine has a feature on this week's lacrosse opponent, Ohio State. OSU Coach Nick Myers is a product of Springfield College.
A Division III All-American at Springfield College, a school with international recognition as a pioneer in physical education and that has produced several current college lacrosse coaches, Myers led the Pride to a 16-2 mark and NCAA tournament berth with 52 goals and 39 assists in 2001. He met Breschi through his younger brother, Pat, then an Ohio State standout.
Lax Magazine also mentions: Ohio State's brutal, non-conference schedule continues Saturday at UMass. It will be the first-ever meeting between the Buckeyes and Minutemen, and Myers' first time trolling the sidelines at Garber Field, a notoriously difficult place to play for visitors.
"I grew up with a 'Garber Gorillas' t-shirt when I was a kid," Myers said. "My stepfather introduced me to Dick Garber. He's a legend in the game."

The NFL off-season is filled with uncertainty, but one thing we do know: Though they haven't made any public announcements, the Jets have decided to move second-year offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse to right tackle. That, of course, could impact the future of incumbent Damien Woody.
Ducasse, a second-round pick from UMass, played in only two games as a rookie, mop-up appearances. The organization talked him up after the draft, claiming he would battle Matt Slauson for the starting job at left guard. Ducasse, overwhelmed by the position change (he was a left tackle in college) and the speed of the NFL, never mounted a serious challenge. He was inactive for 11 games.
At 6-5, 325, Ducasse has the size to play right tackle. The question is whether he has enough agility to hold up in pass protection. Because of his raw power, he has the potential to be a terrific strong-side run blocker.

UMass sophomore Freddie Riley has two pairs of white shoes that he wears only in games, with similar phrases on both. They serve as a tribute, a memorial to people he cares about living and dead, and a window into a difficult past he's trying to put behind him.
Read Matt Vautour's story on Riley and the inscriptions on his shoes in the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
Hays says, "With Plourde (1.30 ERA, 556 strikeouts) healthy, the lineup should have time to find its rhythm on the road to the NCAA tournament."
Hays went on to name fellow A-10 school Fordham as a sleeper to reach the Women's College World Series, and Missouri as a sleeper to win the National Championship.

Former Minuteman Doug Clark has been playing in Mexico this winter and helped the Yaquis club to its first Caribbean Series title on Monday beating Venezuela 3-0, capping off a 4-2 series record.
Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic play each year for the Caribbean Series championship.
Clark, who is currently affiliated with the Kansas City Royals batted .250 with six hits in 24 at bats in the six-game series.

"I'm hoping that the students we're striving for have some school pride," Kellogg said. "That they come because they go to UMass, because we're their basketball team, and you know what, there's not much else to do on a Sunday."

Checkout Scott Cournoyer's recap of the Giegengack Invitational. The Daily Collegian recaps the two-day event in which both the men and women had a series of strong performances.
"Overall, I was very pleased with the way our team performed, we had some more guys qualify for New England and IC4A events and that's important when thinking about going even further, said coach Ken O'Brien."
The University of Massachusetts football team added two more recruits on Monday. Andre Hill, a junior college wide receiver from Carson, Calif., and Kyle Morgan, a defensive lineman from Milford, are the latest additions, bringing the class to 24, including the five midyear additions. "The Massachusetts women's rowing program has also grabbed the attention of many in the A-10. The Minutewomen, under the tutelage of legendary coach Jim Dietz, won its 12th straight Atlantic 10 Championship in 2007 -- the most consecutive A-10 crowns won by any team, in any sport. Dietz, who is in his 17th season at the helm, has guided his teams to 54 Atlantic 10 gold medals in 14 league championship events. He has been honored as the A-10 Coach of the Year seven times."
The UMass tennis team played its first home match of the spring semester on Sunday, defeating NJIT in dominating fashion, 6-1. The Minutewomen won two out of three doubles matches to take the doubles point before winning five out of the six singles matches.
This year the announced UMass recruiting class features 22 players, 17 true freshman and five mid year additions. The recruiting class is very offensively heavy with 16 of the 22 players coming from that side of the ball. Five players are listed as playing defense while kicker Andrew Ortiz out of The King's Academy in West Palm Beach, Fla. is the loan special teams player.
Tonight and next Monday, college hockey will take center stage on the Boston sports scene. Alumni and fans of Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern and Harvard will pack into the Garden as the schools battle for city bragging rights in the Beanpot.
It's a great tradition that leads to a simple question: Why doesn't basketball have a similar event?
"I think in the state of Massachusetts you have to do some untraditional stuff just to keep the fans interested and give them kind of a special day," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "Massachusetts is such a strong professional sports state that you have to keep people's interest by doing some different things on the college level."

Jack Reid has played in seven games with the Boston Blazers and has 17 loose balls.
Jeff Zywicki continues to be on the injured list with the Washington Stealth. He played in the season opener and had three goals and two assists before suffering a lower body injury.
The Herald in Everett reports: the 2005 UMass alum is "ahead of schedule" and could potentially come off the injured reserve on Feb. 23 with the team looking at a March 5 return date as more possible.
For the year, Gaffney is averaging 7.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 52.6 from the floor in 13 D-League games.
Also in today's Collegian, David Martin has this nice sidebar on Cerie Mosgrove's contributions to the Minutewomen squad this season.
Coen comes to URI after a single season at Brown University, where he served as the Bears' quarterbacks coach. The former La Salle Academy star and four-year standout at UMass will fill the same position with the Rams, bringing with him a résumé that includes the six school records that he set with the Minutemen and a single season with the Alabama Vipers of the Arena Football League.
After an inaugural event that landed founder Scott Crowder and his crew the Lakes Region Association's prestigious Tourism Award, the event is back with more action on the ice and even more fun for the entire family. It will feature over 150 teams (over 1,000 participants) competing on 14 rinks over three days for the coveted Lake WinnipeHockey Cup, but it doesn't end there as the weekend will feature skills competitions, balloon and helicopter rides.
"We've been working hard," said Crowder, who played college hockey at UMass and is the son of former UNH and Boston Bruins player Bruce Crowder. "We're pumped. The big dance is coming. We're ready. The town is ready. The team is ready. It's exciting.
Last season was a disappointing one for Massachusetts, which went 8-6 and failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years. A contributing factor was injuries, and Minutemen coach Greg Cannella said avoiding the injury bug is important again this year.
"A lot of things have to go your way," he said Monday. "This is a team that needs to have better leadership than the previous team from last year and also stay healthy. We're not as deep as we'd like to be. So health is definitely critical to us."
In case you are wondering the latest on the UMass-SLU game being played with the weather in the midwest. UMass officials have been in touch with both Saint Louis and Atlantic 10 officials through the week as UMass travelled. Barring major changes in the weather, the game is expected to be played as both teams are in town, the television truck and staff have arrived.
Here is an update from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The city is pretty much on lockdown because of the storm and the Blues have called off their game tonight against Colorado. SLU is expecting to play its game with UMass on Wednesday night at Chaifetz Arena and will finalize its decision on Wednesday afternoon.
There's good reason to expect the game to be played. UMass got into town on Monday night, so they're here, and the officials are expected to be here. (The crew for the game was juggled so the refs weren't coming in from the East Coast.) If the storm has passed by midday Wednesday, as anticipated, that should allow SLU to play the game. The SLU campus was closed on Tuesday, and if it's closed again on Wednesday, that could complicate matters.
The Blues' game was called off even though both teams and the officials were in town because it was decided it was too dangerous for fans and arena employees to travel to the game. The roads figure to be better by Wednesday evening if the storm sticks to its schedule.
The Bud Light UMass Hockey Radio Show With Toot Cahoon that was scheduled for Tuesday night at 7 PM at the Hangar Pub & Grill has been cancelled due to the weather. The Mass Attack will head to No. 1 Boston College on Friday night and No. 12 Merrimack on Saturday.
The next UMass Hockey Radio Show is scheduled for Tuesday, February 8 at 7 PM at the Hangar. Fans can listen on 100.9 FM WRNX or online at UMassAthletics.com. Fans can also submit questions any time for Coach Cahoon to answer during the show.

Anyone in the stands or watching on TV couldn't help but root for Thomas Robinson on Saturday.
The Kansas sophomore was playing for the first time since attending his mother's funeral two days before, a service that concluded a miserable month for the 19-year-old Washington D.C. native. Robinson's two grandparents died shortly before Lisa Robinson, his 43-year-old mother, died of an apparent heart attack on Jan. 21.
Only the most passionate of Kansas State fans, the Jayhawks' foe that afternoon, weren't wishing success for the heavy-hearted forward.
Few were rooting harder for Robinson than Javorn Farrell. The University of Massachusetts sophomore was glued to the television as the game aired Saturday night. He and Robinson were teammates at Riverdale Baptist in Upper Marlboro, Md., and have been very close ever since.
