This week for the Minutemen
The Matchup
  • Massachusetts and Miami have played three times in series history, including a recent thriller at Miami that saw the RedHawks survive 86-84 on Jan. 27. 
  • Graduate student Leonardo Bettiol recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in that loss, while Marcus Banks Jr., score 18 points, going 4-of-9 from three-point range. 
  • Daniel Hankins-Sanford added 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. 
  • For the RedHawks, Eian Elmer led all scorers with 30 points, while Justin Kirby and Peter Suder each scored 13 points. 
  • Massachusetts won the previous two meetings between the teams when they competed in a home-and-home series over the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. 
  • The team first met on January 2, 2013, in Oxford, Ohio, when Massachusetts narrowly won 70-69 with Raphiael Putney (20 points, nine rebounds) leading the way for UMass. 
  • The second meeting came on January 4, 2014, when Massachusetts secured a 73-65 victory at the Mullins Center.  
  • Chaz Williams led the Minutemen by scoring 18 points.
Last Time out
  • Massachusetts fell, 99-92, at Akron on Friday night, moving to 6-7 overall in the MAC. 
  • K'Jei Parker finished as the leading scorer for UMass with 20 points, including a 5-for-10 showing from three.
  • Marcus Banks Jr. and Leonardo Bettiol totaled 18 points for the Minutemen, while Danny Carbuccia contributed 13. 
Scouting the Redhawks
  • The No. 23-ranked Miami RedHawks come to Amherst as the only undefeated team in the country.
  • RedHawks Head Coach Travis Steele is in his fourth season at Miami (OH), accumulating a 77-46 (46-25 MAC) overall record during his time in Oxford, Ohio. 
  • Brant Byers leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 per game. Byers ranks 11th in the MAC with his average. 
  • Eian Elmer (5.9 per game) and Antwone Woolfolk (5.5 per game) lead the team in rebounding, as Elmer sits 11th in the conference and Woolfolk ranks 16th. 
  • The RedHawks are 25-0 overall and 12-0 in the MAC.
Year Four Under Coach Martin
  • Massachusetts basketball enters its fourth season under head coach Frank Martin in 2024-25. 
  • Under Martin's leadership the Minutemen enjoyed their best campaign since 2014 last year, finishing the 2023-24 season with a 20-11 overall record and securing a top-four seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship
  • Martin ended the 2023-24 campaign ranked third in program history with a 35-27 record through his first two seasons with the Minutemen, sitting just below Bruiser Flint and Travis Ford.
  • Coach Martin started his time in Amherst by leading the Minutemen to their best record under a first-year head coach since 1996 and the Myrtle Beach Invitational title during the 2022-23 campaign
  • Martin holds a 350-259 (.576) collegiate coaching mark, picking up 171 of his wins in 10 seasons at South Carolina while recording 117 wins in five seasons at Kansas State.
  • Head coach Frank Martin picked up his 300th collegiate coaching win on Jan. 25, 2023 with a 85-76 win over Richmond. 
  • Martin picked up his 350th collegiate coaching win on Feb. 3, 2026 with a 95-89 win over Central Michigan.
RANKED GAME NOTES
  • Massachusetts most recently played a ranked opponent in that loss in Miami earlier this season as the RedHawks were ranked 24th (Jan. 27). 
  • Prior to January 2026, UMass had most recently played a ranked opponent on Feb. 15, 2020 when it faced sixth-ranked Dayton (L, 71-63 at the Mullins Center). 
  • Massachusetts last defeated a ranked opponent on Nov. 22, 2013 when it downed New Mexico 81-65 in the semifinals of the Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C. (TD Arena). 
  • The Minutemen last defeated a ranked opponent at the Mullins Center on Dec. 9, 2004 by upsetting seventh-ranked Connecticut 61-59 on Rashaun Freeman's layup with 4.3 seconds to play. 
  • A total of 9,037 attended that Thursday night game against the Huskies and stormed the court after the final buzzer.
