#13/12 Army Takes Season Opener Over Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse, 16-9

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts was unable to recover from a 6-0 first quarter deficit, dropping its season opener to No. 13/12 Army, 16-9 on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. UMass begins the year at 0-1, while the Black Knights start at 1-0.
Freshman midfielder Tyler Clayton posted a hat trick in his collegiate debut for the Gorillas, while freshman Robbie Granara had two goals and senior transfer Trace Hogan contributed three assists and a goal for four points in his first game with the Maroon & White to go along with three ground balls.
Jackson Eicher led the way for Army with seven points on four goals and three assists and Brayden Fountain logged four goals and Hill Plunkett recorded two goals and two assists.
Army outscored the Gorillas 6-0 in the opening frame, which included a hat trick from Eicher in the final 6:48 of the period. Junior Aiden Drunsic put UMass on the board 13:35 into the second as the Gorillas outscored the Black Knights 4-1 in the frame to pull within three at the intermission, 7-4.
Coming out of the break, Army netted the first two tallies of the second half, beginning a 6-1 third quarter for the Black Knights to put the game out of reach.
Army ended the day with a 55-28 shot advantage and collected 30 ground balls to UMass' 26 and went 1-for-3 in extra man opportunities, while the Gorillas were 0-for-2.
Freshman Owen Salanger came in in relief of starter Tyler Bluse (five saves) and made 13 stops in his collegiate debut. Starter Sean Byrne had seven saves for the Black Knights.
UMass will continue its homestand to open 2025 when the squad plays host to Quinnipiac on Friday, February 14 at 2 p.m. on Garber Field.
