AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts football hosts Buffalo on Saturday, October 18, at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+ for Family Weekend and Band Day.
SERIES HISTORY
- In a series that dates to 1964, Massachusetts and Buffalo have met 15 times with the Bulls holding the all-time series edge, 9-6.
- The Minutemen lead the series 6-2 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
- The teams met last season in Buffalo, with the Bulls posting a 34-3 win on Sept. 14, 2024.
- In that loss, current Minuteman Derrieon Craig had a team-best six solo tackles and assisted with another for a total of seven tackles, while adding a fumble recovery, a quarterback hurry and pass breakup.
- Massachusetts' last win in the series came on November 27, 2015 when the Minutemen posted a 31-26 win at UB Stadium in Amherst, New York to end the season.
- Then freshman Marquis Young paced the Minutemen with 240 rushing yards on 35 carries and added three touchdowns in that win.
- In the UMass records book, Justin Reimer tied for the single-game record with 15 solo tackles against Buffalo in 1995, while the Minutemen also tied their single-game high with 11 sacks.
- In 1998 against the Bulls, Marcel Shipp tied for the ninth-most all-purpose yards with 282.
- The first meeting between the two teams came on Oct. 3, 1964 when the Minutemen posted a 24-22 road win as part of an 8-1 regular season record that propelled the team to a Tangerine Bowl berth.
TIMMY TACKLES
- Timmy Hinspeter is averaging 10.8 tackles per game to rank third in the MAC and fourth in the nation, trailing only Owen Long (14.2/Colorado State), Quinton Urwiler (11.7/Northern Illinois) and Red Murdock (11.7/Buffalo) meaning two of the nation's top-four tacklers will feature in Saturday's game.
- Hinspeter now has double digit tackles in three consecutive games after posting a team-high 10 (two solo) against Kent State.
- At No. 19/20 Missouri, Hinspeter had 17 tackles (five solo) to go along with his first career interception, a sack and two tackles for loss.
- It marked the highest single-game tackle total for a Minuteman since Jalen Mackie had 19 against Army on Nov. 26, 2022.
- Against Western Michigan, Hinspeter added 14 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for a two-week average of 15.5 tackles per game.

- Gibson's 7.2 receptions per game leads the MAC and ranks seventh nationally, while his 71.6 receiving yards per game ranks fourth in the league (47th nationally).
- UMass' seven turnovers lost in six games this season ranks seventh in the MAC (56th nationally).
- Keegan Andrews' 46.30 yards per punt ranks third in the MAC and 17th nationally.
- Tyler Martin (a pick six) and DD Snyder II each had an interception against Bryant, marking the first two interception game by the Minutemen since Oct. 28, 2023, when UMass downed Army 21-14 (Juan Lua and Jeremiah McGill had the interceptions on that day).
- Against Bryant, Derek Morris' 53-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter marked the longest field goal in program history, surpassing Sandro Vitiello (vs. Boston College, 1978) and Denis Gagnon (vs. New Hampshire, 1971) who both kicked a 52-yard field goals.
FAMILY WEEKEND & BAND DAY
- Family Weekend is a chance for families to visit campus, spend time with their students, and share in all the Minuteman pride. It's an opportunity to see firsthand how students are navigating life at UMass and growing academically, socially and personally.
- In addition to the home football game against Buffalo, Massachusetts Athletics will host a men's soccer match at noon on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Rudd Field, and two hockey games at the Mullins Center — facing Northeastern at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17 and Bentley at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
- Saturday's game will also feature the annual Band Day at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, as more than 2,000 students from 42 local high schools join the UMass Minuteman Marching Band for a day of music, spirit and on-field performances.
