The Minutewomen secure their first Atlantic 10 victory of the season.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis picked up its first Atlantic 10 victory of the year on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Richmond, 4-1, at the Bay Road Indoor Tennis Center.
Massachusetts picked up the doubles point with finishes on courts No. 3 and No. 2. Mariana Campino and Renata Farima got off to a fast start, downing Richmond's Carly Cohen and Lainey O'Neil, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles first. Ella Faessler and Amelia Tye clinched the point for the Minutewomen with a 6-3 win over Polina Shitikova and Lara Bakhaya of Richmond at No. 2.
The Minutewomen continued strong competition in singles after picking up wins at courts No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. Danielle Hack went out to a quick first set win, before dominating her second set at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over the Spiders' Andrea Campodonico. Thamonpan Jonglertrakul defeated Cohen of Richmond, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to give UMass a 3-0 lead. Richmond's Bakhaya grabbed a point for the Spiders, winning 7-6(4), 6-1 over Campino at court No. 4, but Faessler clinched the match soon after at No. 3, earning a three-set victory at 6-0, 5-7, 6-3, over Leonor Oliveira of Richmond.
Massachusetts closes out the weekend on Sunday, April 7, with a 1 p.m. match against A-10 rival George Washington in Amherst.
