Four School Records Broken On Day Two Of A-10 Swim And Dive Championships

The Minutewomen sit in seventh place, while the Minutemen are in fourth after the second day of competition.

HAMPTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts swimming and diving saw four school records broken after completing day two of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Hampton Aquaplex on Thursday evening.  Day three of the A-10 Championships will begin on Friday, February 24, at 10 a.m.
 
In individual events, senior Maggie Desmond recorded a new school record during the prelims of the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.84, breaking a previous record of 22.93 held by Ansley Baker (2018-19). On the men's side, senior Sam Haddad broke his own previous school record of 1:48.08 in the 200 individual medley, racing a time of 1:47.60 in the champion finals, while Sammy Quigg swam a school record time of 20.17 in the 50 freestyle champion finals, breaking Owen Wright's (2017-18) record of 20.24.
 
The women's 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Beren Cakiroglu, senior Megan Mitchell, senior Caroline Mahoney and Desmond combined for a time of 1:32.00 to hold the new school record. The team previously owned the program record in the event earlier this season with a time of 1:32.76.
 
Women's Swimming & Diving
In addition to Desmond's 50 freestyle performance in the prelims that earned her a third-place finish, Mahoney also registered a personal best time in the event with a time of 23.20, placing fourth all-time in the record book, and tying for 12th in the event. During the champion finals of the 50 freestyle, Desmond competed, finishing seventh with a time of 23.12.
 
Cakiroglu, Mitchell, Mahoney and Desmond took sixth place with their school record time of 1:32.00 in the 200 freestyle relay. Cakiroglu swam a personal-best time of 23.74 in the 50 freestyle to lead off the relay team.
 
Men's Swimming & Diving
In the 500 freestyle champion finals, freshman Jude Boukarroum landed seventh all-time in school history, after swimming a personal-best time of 4:28.61 to place seventh. Graduate student Emerson Kiefer claimed 10th-place in the event, recording a personal-best time pf 4:28.22, marking the fifth-best time in school history.
 
Haddad's school record time of 1:47.60 in the 200 individual medley placed him sixth in the event, while Quigg took seventh in the 50 freestyle with his school record time of 20.17.
 
The 200 freestyle relay team of junior Grant Beebe, junior Beau Bengston, sophomore Aidan Shepston and Quigg swam a time of 1:21.33, placing seventh. Beebe led off the team in the 50 freestyle, finishing with a personal-best time of 20.94.
