Massachusetts Hockey Announces 2000's All-Decade Team - Presented by Milton CAT

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey announced its second of three All-Decade Teams, presented by Milton CAT, unveiling the fan vote winners of the 2000's era during last Friday night's game against Boston College. Fans selected forwards James Marcou, Greg Mauldin and Stephen Werner, defensemen Justin Braun and Thomas Poeck and goaltender Jonathan Quick.
 
Meet the Massachusetts hockey 2000's All-Decade Team:
 
Greg Mauldin – Holliston, Mass. – Forward – 2001-04
Greg Mauldin, a three-year letterwinner in his time at UMass, played from 2001 to 2004 and is currently tied for 20th all-time in program history in career scoring with 94 points in 98 career games on 48 goals and 46 assists and is ninth on the all-time goals list. The Holliston, Massachusetts native was an Honorable Mention Hockey East All-Star in 2002-03 after logging 41 points on 21 goals and 20 assists in 36 games and earned a Hockey East All-Tournament Team nod in 2004. Mauldin was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the seventh round in 2002 and played 36 career NHL games, part of a 20+ year career in professional hockey. He is currently playing for the Stavanger Oilers in Norway.
 
James Marcou – Kings Park, N.Y. – Forward – 2007-10
James Marcou was a three-year letterwinner for the Minutemen from 2007 to 2010 and still holds the program's career record for assists with 96. He finished his career with 130 points in 111 career games played and 34 career goals. Marcou became the sixth All-American in program history with his AHCA Second-Team nod following his sophomore season in 2008-09. His 35 points during the conference campaign tied him for the Hockey East scoring title, the first Minuteman to ever lead the league in points. He finished the year with 47 points on 15 goals and 32 assists. His 32 assists set a then-UMass single-season record, while his 47 points currently ranks tied for seventh all-time. A two-time All-Hockey East performer and New England Hockey Writers All-Star, Marcou broke his own school record for single-season assists with 40 as a junior in 2009-10. Marcou currently ranks fifth among UMass' all-time scorers. Forgoing his senior year, The Kings Park, New York native signed a free agent contract with the San Jose Sharks and played two and a half seasons in the AHL before medically retiring. He served on the Massachusetts hockey staff as a volunteer assistant coach from 2016 to 2018 and is currently in his fifth season as an assistant coach at Harvard.
 
Stephen Werner – Chevy Chase, Maryland – Forward – 2002-06
Stephen Werner was a four-year letterwinner for the Minutemen from 2002 to 2006, serving as team captain as a junior and senior. He was selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round of the 2003 NHL Draft following his freshman campaign in Amherst. Werner was a unanimous Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection and named to the All-Tournament Team in 2003. The Chevy Chase, Maryland native was a four-time Hockey East weekly award winner and was tabbed Hockey East Rookie of the Month once. Werner was voted as Team MVP in 2004-05 and the team's Rookie of the Year in 2002-03. He currently ranks sixth all-time in scoring with 116 career points, is tied seventh all-time in career goals with 50 and tied for eighth in career assists with 66. Werner is tied for third in career game winning goals with eight and second in career shorthanded goals with seven. The 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship Gold medal winner with Team USA played in the ECHL and AHL from 2005 to 2009 upon the completion of his collegiate career.
 
Justin Braun – Vadnais Heights, Minn. – Defenseman – 2006-10
A four-year letterwinner and captain in 2009-10, Justin Braun played 150 consecutive career games, a program record, from 2006 to 2010 and posted 88 career points on 23 goals and 65 assists and was +12. The Vadnais Heights, Minnesota native earned Second Team AHCA/Reebok All-American honors following his senior campaign for the Minutemen where he posted career best numbers. In 2009-10, Braun's efforts earned him a spot on the New England All-Star Team and he was named the Bob Monahan Top Defenseman by the New England Writers' Association. He was selected to the Hockey East All-Star First Team in 2009-10 and picked as the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Year, as well. The two-time Co-Team MVP (2009 and 2010), was a Hockey East Second-Team All-Star in 2008-09 and a Hockey East All-Rookie Team member in 2006-07. Braun currently ranks 10th all-time in career assists and sits third in career power-play points with 46. Drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 2007, Braun went on to play 842 games over 13 seasons in the NHL and amassed 199 points on 34 goals and 165 assists.
 
Thomas Poeck – Klagenfurt, Austria – Defenseman – 2000-04
Thomas Poeck, who played four seasons in Amherst from 2000-2004, was the Minutemen's first-ever Hobey Baker finalist and an all-American selection in 2004. That same year he was named as the InsideCollegeHockey.com National Defenseman of the Year. Over his final two seasons, Poeck helped UMass to a 38-29-7 record and a pair of appearances in the Hockey East Championship Semifinals. In 2004,  he became the Minutemen's first-ever Hockey East First Team All-Conference selection after being named to the second team in 2003. The converted forward was the seventh player in program history to eclipse the 100-point barrier and finished his career with 102 points on 44 goals and 58 assists in 130 games. As a senior, he had a career-best 41 points with 16 goals and 25 assists. Poeck, A native of Klagenfurt, Austria, played for the Austrian National Team and made Olympic appearances in 2002 (while a sophomore at UMass) and again in 2014. Professionally, Poeck signed a free agent contract with the New York Rangers after the 2004 season ended and scored his first NHL goal that same day. All told, he spent 11 years playing hockey professionally between the NHL, the AHL and in Europe. He was inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2014.
 
Jonathan Quick – Hamden, Conn. – Goaltender – 2005-07
A two-year letterwinner at UMass from 2005-07, Jonathan Quick led the Minutemen to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 while posting team single-season records with 19 wins, 37 appearances, 1,046 saves and 2,224 minutes played. He finished his sophomore season with a 19-12-5 record, three shutouts, a 2.16 GAA (tied for 11th in the nation) and a .929 save percentage (fifth in the nation). That season, he became UMass' fifth All-American selection earning second-team honors, while collecting All-New England and Hockey East Second Team accolades along with Team MVP recognition. He still holds program career record for saves per-game (28.96) and ranks second all-time in career save percentage (.926) and third in career goals against average (2.40). The 2005 third round draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings who is currently with the New York Rangers, has won the Stanley Cup three times in his NHL career, twice with LA in 2012 and 2014 and most recently with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. Quick became the 30th NHL goalie and fourth born in the United States to play 700 games in March 2022. The Hamden, Connecticut native took sole possession of second place on the NHL all-time wins list among United States-born goalies with 31 saves in a 4-3 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on March 21, 2023. It was his 375th win, moving past John Vanbiesbrouck (374).
