In Memoriam: George "Trigger" Burke 1932-2024

February 19, 2024 | Men's Basketball

AHMERST, MASS. -- The man for whom the Massachusetts Athletics Hall of Fame is named, George "Trigger" Burke, passed away at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts on Feb. 14, 2024 at 91 years old.

A 1956 second-team all-America selection, Burke was also named First-Team All-East, All-New England, All-Yankee Conference, and an All-Boston Garden selection. He was the first player in program history to lead UMass in scoring and assists in the same season.

Burke is one of only six former Minutemen to have his jersey retired, and his No. 32, shared with fellow UMass legend Julius Erving, hangs from the rafters of the Mullins Center. In 1996, Burke revived the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame through his generous contribution.

George Burke was a distinguished member of his community as a former acting mayor in the city of Quincy and district attorney in Norforlk County. Burke's commitment to the success of the UMass Athletic Department and the University of Massachusetts were unmatched, and he will be deeply missed.
