Hughes named to All-Southeast Region First Team, Kelly makes All-Southeast Region Second Team
AMHERST, Mass. -- Graduate forward Alec Hughes and Junior center back Aidan Kelly have been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Teams, the organization announced this week. The duo was instrumental in UMass reaching the NCAA Men's Soccer Elite Eight for the first time since 2007 and second time in program history.
Hughes posted 16 goals, 33 total points, 1.74 points per game and two hat-tricks in addition to four game-winning goals. The Glastonbury, Conn. native delivered in some of the biggest moments this season, tallying game-winning goals against No. 6 Penn, no. 23 Duquesne, Yale, Dartmouth, and Brown. The graduate forward ranks Top-10 in the country for goals scored (3rd), game-winning goals (T-4th), goals per game (4th), total points (7th), and points per game (10th). With Hughes at the helm, UMass scored the 7th most goals in the NCAA this season.
Hughes broke the record for All-Time goals scored in program history this season, passing Jeff Deren's ('03) record of 48, scoring a brace on the road against St. Bonaventure on Nov. 2. Hughes has netted 16 goals on the season and tallied one assist, good for 33 total points on the 2024 campaign and 51 goals over his five-year career. He currently trails recent Massachusetts Athletics Hall of Famer Jeff Deren on total points in program history (113), with Hughes having 110 points. The Glastonbury, Conn. native made Atlantic 10 history this season, becoming the first player in conference history to earn A-10 Offensive Player of the Year three years in a row.
Aidan Kelly Started in all 22 games for the Minutemen, the center back has been instrumental to the Minutemen's Top-5 A-10 defense in goals allowed, opponent scoring average, and margin of victory during the regular season. Kelly has played 1957 minutes this season for UMass, scoring four goals and recording two assists for 10 points. The Belfast, Northern Ireland native has helped the Minutemen rank T-15th in the nation for shutout percentage, contributing to 10 clean sheets this year.
