Massachusetts Falls To No. 7 Rutgers On Sunday Afternoon

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Minutewomen (6-4, 2-0) scored early but fell to No. 7 Rutgers (9-0, 1-0) by a score of 4-2 on Sunday at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. UMass owned the advantage in total shots (13) and penalty corners (6) but could not capitalize as the Scarlet Knights claimed the victory. 
 
Massachusetts did not waste time offensively as Sophomore Mali Herberhold put the Minutewomen on the board 45 seconds into the first period of play. The Minutewomen held strong defensively for much of the first period, until Rutgers scored two goals off of deflections in immediate succession to make the score 2-1 heading into the second quarter.  
 
Despite rainy conditions, the Minutewomen turned up the offensive pressure for much of the final 45 minutes, holding a 12-5 shot advantage in the final three quarters. However, the Scarlet Knights remained steady during the second half, scoring their fourth goal of the game early in the fourth quarter.  
 
In net sophomore Myrte van Herwijnen kept the Minutewomen in the game recording six saves including four in the first quarter alone. With her six saves on the day the Huizen, The Netherlands native has now recorded at least six saves in three of her last four games. 
 
Breaking Down The Action 
  • Massachusetts struck early as Herberhold netted the game-opening goal, making it 1-0 just 45 seconds into the first quarter. 
  • Rutgers responded as Indy van Ek tipped in the equalizer with 1:33 remaining in the first period. 
  • The Scarlet Knights made it two goals in the first quarter as Guillermina Causarano scored on a high deflection to make it 2-1 heading into the second period.  
  • Rutgers made it 3-1 with 8:55 minutes remaining in the first half, as Causarano scored her second goal of the game. 
  • Causarano closed the scoring for the Scarlet Knights, scoring her third goal of the game, and extending the Rutgers lead to 4-1 with 11:27 left in regulation. 
  • Graduate Student Jess Beech converted a penalty stroke as time expired, ending the game with a score of 4-2.
