Massachusetts Falls To VCU In Defensive Clash

RICHMOND, VA. -- The Minutewomen (6-5, 2-1) competed hard in the defensive third but fell to VCU (8-2, 2-1) by a score of 1-0 on Friday at Cary Street Field.

Massachusetts found themselves in a defensive battle for much of the first 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Myrte van Herwijnen recorded four of her game-high eight saves in the first half to keep the score at a 0-0 tie heading into the second half. Van Herwijnen has now equaled her season-high in saves (9) three times and twice in the last three games.

VCU was able to maintain offensive pressure in the third quarter as Josephine Jense provided a one-goal lead the Rams would not surrender. The Rams controlled the offensive third for the majority of play, holding the advantage in shots and corners.
